Hi all

Wifes runaround has failed its MOT, Indicator/Column Switch and a ball joint.

Garage have quoted £189.00 for the switch and £40.00 labour, £11.00 for the ball joint and £40.00 labour.

Car is 13 years old and has done over 100,000 miles so i need to weigh the cost of getting it through its MOT against putting the money towards a new car. Set a budget of £300.00,so still within budget, but i have two reservations. One is the cost of the column switch and the other is the labour cost to fit the ball joint.

I've seen column switches online for as little as £125.00, but there seems to be so many variations, i'm worried i might buy the wrong one, is there some way to be sure ? Ball joint looks like a 20 minute job, so is £40.00 labour fair ? this is a local garage and not a main dealer or independent specialist.

Any advice greatly appreciated as always.

Ball joint is a very easy job or a complete pain in the bollocks you will never know till you try so they are pricing it accordingly

column switch can be had cheaper you need to match the functions of the switch with what your car has the part no does not matter but as with anything there are exceptions search on here for com 2000 you will find a list they are not that hard to fit if you are technically minded and work methodically again their fitting price is reasonable.
