Hi there!

I've recently managed to get through a few blips with my lovely 1999 2.0 Hdi and am buzzing at the amount of difference a new MAF has made that I fitted today (had limp mode and management light on throwing all sorts of errors on my new PP2000...).

As I was tearing it up the road as if it were a new car :D I felt a bit of shudder at above 70.

I remembered the MOT in May had an advisory and checked - its 'offside rear tie bar/rod has slight play in ball joint' [2.4.G.2].

I checked the wheel and found there is indeed some play on the horizontal. I looked up Euro car parts but couldn't find a rear ball joint OR tie rod/bar.

did a bit of digging around and found there are a few things it could be. Took it to a guy on our street with a pit and both he and I looked to see if we could see which 'tie bar' (as a few seem to perform a 'tie' function) had play but it just wasn't visible.....

so before I go buying random parts, or paying him to check it out when he admits it could take some time, has anyone here come across it and know what it might be?

I found these : eurocarparts dot com/ecp/c/Peugeot_406_2.0_1999/p/car-parts/suspension-and-steering/suspension/suspension-arm-and-suspension-joints/?600735208&1&5a96248734b550cf2acb7ec7e79fca36a5f19c5b&000320 (had to take link out cos not enough posts, but just swap the word dot for a ., its an Ocap suspension arm)

but when looking on the car, it doesn't look like it has a balljoint, or play  (if its a shortish bar about a foot long), and the other things he pegged as potential 'tie bars' don't seem to be on me ol' buddy euro car parts.

I'm not sure if its just a general MOT code that could refer to any play found on a rear tyre, so if anyone has a heads up or insight, I'd be most grateful!

I'm just north of ipswich so happy to bring it to someone nearby, or if its a easy known to one of you, I'll happily buy you a pint when I'm in your neck of the woods! :)

cheers

Chris

Ps apologies if this is a bit of war and peace, but wanted to let you know that I've done a bit of looking before coming on the beg

What body is the car?
the diesel estate

It tends to be the top bar that wears causing strange movement its the one that looks like a drop link going horizontaly top of hub to chassis

Yeah, that's the one part I found. thanks so much. nice to know I was at least on the right track. I can now focus on that. And yes, it does cause some strange movement in the car (and the wheel if it's behind the play)...I found myself wondering over the last few days if it was the road surface or something else on odd occasions, at both low and high speed.

should I do them as a pair? How would you rate its difficulty as a job? I can do pretty basic to medium tasks and can problem solve somewhat, but don't have specialist tools like huge mm sockets or joint busters :D

thanks for the quick replies :thumb:
