waterpump bearing/alternator bearing...clutch bearing...idler bearing.......what engine do you have and does the noise go if you depress the clutch....if you can.. take off the auxilliary drive belt and check every pulley for play and a 'dryness' feel when rotated.....

Noise doesn't change when clutch is used. It is very loud, whine and very high pitch.

I had a very loud whine on my 307 for about 2 years - the noise would still continue when the clutch was pressed and the engine was at idle when travelling at speed.
It was so loud i was convinced it was from the gearbox or diff.
At the MOT it failed on a front wheel bearing, after i put a new bearing on the whine disappeared.
It was amazing how loud a wheel bearing can get..
