Hi guys, I tried to program a second hand key for a fellow member today but didn't have much luck.

He had the original blades so the ignition could be turned on and off ok, the key he got from the scrappy had a new looking circuit board In it along with the magnet looking part inside the plastic case, so looks like a fully functional key.

I got as far as replacement parts, transponder key, learn new key, enter confidential card all went fine. Choose only 1 key to be programmed as he only has 1

Unlock car with key. Put key in and turn on ignition, learning key in progress, remove key.

This happened 3 times to the point where it locks you out for 15 minutes and says key not learnt.

Tried again using the circuit board from his original key, but same again, 3 attempts and locked out.

Is there anything I'm missing here? He said the car worked fine before he broke the original key and accidentally binned the plastic casing containing the magnet which inside it.

It's not a magnet, it's a transponder for the immobiliser. I'm not sure whether a new transponder can be programmed using the original module, but a used transponder cannot - they are write-once. Also, a module and transponder from a scrappy is useless on any car but the one it was originally programmed to - they cannot be re-used on another car.

You can try programming a brand new transponder (they are cheap) with the original module. If that does not work, you need a complete brand new fob. If you post the last eight digits of the VIN, I will look up the correct part number.
