Hello everyone,
I am wondering if anyone has had this issue with their 2014 308?
I will keep it brief and to the point. When I start my car, the engine runs rough and has a slight rattle noise for around 15-20 seconds then corrects itself. There is a change of tone underneath the bonnet, then runs fine again until the next start up.

The car also has a bad idle, and almost conks out until the car has warmed up, then again runs fine for the rest of any journey. Maybe the two are linked?

Petrol - 27000 miles - regular servicing.

Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

The 1st issue you describe, the "rough, rattling noise for 15-20 seconds" could be related to hydrolifters (for valves) that lose oil pressure when engine is off, so they rattle a bit until pressure builds up to keep oil flowing. I had that on 2 cars before, but they had much more miles on them than yours has.

On the other hand, both those symptoms together could be indicative of fuel line pressure problems (pressure too low), but when engine warms up it gets better. Had that issue too, also on older cars (once it was fuel pump, other time it was fuel pressure regulator).

And finally, it could be something idle-related, like sensor for air temp, or similar.

Or it could be something that doesn't come to mind right now.

You should go to have your car checked. They'll need it at least overnight to see the issue for themselves, and I guess some diagnostic would point to where the problem might be.

Thank you for your responses.

I have been in a battle with Peugeot for many many months.

The outcome of this is that I needed a new timing chain kit. Luckily after 4.5 years of ownership they covered the cost 100%! A good result I think. I have lost confidence in the car which is a shame.

That's a fantastic result after 4-1/2 years. Well done.

If that's all fixed and there's nothing else pending then I think that you can relax and enjoy the car.

Not really relax. If that's indeed the 1.6 turbo petrol engine then you will have other failures before car reach 100000 . The timing tensioner is just the tip of the iceberg. Water pump, high pressure fuel pump , gasket cover, carbon buildup.... The good part is only recently PSA started to admit these engine faults and take some responsibility

If you think that's bad, try the BMW 2.0 diesel timing chain problems. Conveniently fitted at the back of the engine too requiring the entire engine to be removed WHEN it goes faulty... about £1500 at an independents and £3-5k at BMW and BMW conveniently just washes their hands of the problem if it's even just slightly out of warranty.

Seeing as this engine was co-developed by BMW around that same timeframe, I bet the same person designed both timing chain systems! :nono:

Yes i have seen the BMW engine with the chain at the rear what an idiotic design you see them on ebay spares or repair regularly !
