Seduction by a French Automotive Mistress.

My 2004, 407 V6 petrol SV, has been a total nightmare. 25 faults in 4 years, 75,000 nervous km, (46,000m).

Solenoids have failed in the transmission, 2 in the oil feed, ignition coils failed – 4 of them at different times, worn (??) suspension bushes at 2000km, steering rack replaced (A$7,500 for the rack alone), oil leaks, etc, etc.

HOWEVER, the most annoying thing is that Peugeot have proprietary repair service, due to software diagnostics being available ONLY at a Peugeot service centre – for instance – my aircon decided not to work. Being out of warranty, I tried a local aircon service centre, gas is ok, that’s all that can be checked. I have to go to my local Peugeot service centre to diagnose the fault.

If you are game/foolish enough to venture too far away from a Peugeot service centre you could be up for a healthy towing bill. I have had my 407 on the back of a truck 4 times. Just go and sit in a Peugeot Service waiting room - I have not encountered one happy owner.

Get rid of it I am advised – $9000 trade-in is the best I have been offered for an otherwise perfectly good car. The problem? – The badge!!

My advice – don’t be seduced by this French automotive mistress. She looks beautiful, is a great ride, I love to drive her on long trips – but she will bite you on the bum when you least expect it – AND OFTEN.

If you don't have factory warranty - don't buy it, or, get rid of it.

I am – at last – going to accept the $9000 offer – AND RUN.

Good luck to those of you sticking with your seductress – you’re going to need it!!

Or you could buy the Peugeot Planet Diagnostic system that Peugeot Service Centre`s use for around £120 and save yourself a fortune - Rule of Thumb "Cars cost Money"
I have my brothers Toyota Avensis sitting in my front yard for Sale that has just had an injector replaced by Toyota for £1000 and that wasn`t the problem he had it was a faulty sensor.

Name me a trouble free car ?????????????????????????????

Right on the money!
I'd be far more annoyed if I'd paid much more than Peugeot money and still had faults.

You blokes have obviously owned too many Peugeots.

With over 50 years of owning cars, I have never had such atrocious reliability.

Many of my past vehicles travelled 200,000km +.

"Sold" 3 of them to my children. Only ever experienced normal maintenance problems.

Like I said - the 407 is analogous to automotive seduction by a French mistress - looks like she's got you blokes by the balls!!

The following does not include consumables like brakes, clutch, tyres, etc

Vauxhall Cavalier - no aircon, no computer, no cat - no bother
Citroen BX19D - cylinder head cracked, suspension kept leaking - clutch mechanism
Ford Mondeo - Steering rack, cylinder head - leaking heater
Volvo S80 - gearbox, injectors, glowplugs - power steering
Peugeot 407 - ABS sensors.

My 306 HDI (before my 407) had done 190k miles (300k km) and was still going strong - until someone wrote it off! With same engine, gearbox, clutch, not losing oil and still 47mpg, it was bloody brilliant. With this performance, it lead to me buying the 407.

Not sure about over there, but here there are plenty of independants with Planet. Its freely available and relatively cheap for a business to acquire.

My 407 was fine, no problemo. Next time have your prospective purchase professionally inspected prior to sale, and don't blame the car because you bought it without having a pro spannermans report first. You wouldn't buy a house without a surveyors report, so why your second most expensive purchase without such professional advice?

I'm now on my 23rd pug. only one gave me minor problems, swiftly repaired under warranty. Only one gave me major issues and because I didn't whittle and stood firm, that was replaced 46 days later with another car, which has proven to be sweet.

That's a better than 90% zero fault rate among my pugs, and I see no reason to change with a track record like that. Even I'm not daft enough to judge a manufacturer by a single example of their wares.
