So I know I'm hogging it a bit on this forum, I'm still new!

I'm still trying to diagnose my 'not starting' problem..

Anyway,
How to you guys get down in the back of the engine?
I'm trying to get a look at the back of the fuel pump(to see if it's leaking), and the pressure regulator (maybe to unplug and test it), and it's a balls! Been messing around today, took the top harness off, disconnected the inductors at the top (can't even see the bottom), the rocker, removed the fuel pump and holder, fuel connections, moved around the primer (can't see where that goes either).
I can't even see the glow plugs yet as I haven't got the egr valve out, it looks like the previous owner sealed it, looks like a plate glued in at the end (if that makes sense).

And previous owner also seems to have threaded a bolt on the intake manifold, so I've got oil leaking down on to the fuel pump, across to the air filter, and all down the back. :(

Anyway, do I go underneath to see what's going on, or just pull the egr valve and try crawl in there? Or the remove the wipers and trim around them? How do you guys get in there?

Think I'm going to have to get a bigger bolt and tap engine to get the manifold sealed properly.

So I know I'm ranted a bit, but any input, ideas, warnings or abuse is welcome.. :)

none starting i would start with the basics

1, does the engine turn over

2, after trying to start turn off leaving key in ignition and open the driver’s door, does the car beep to say the key is in the ignition?

3, what is the battery voltage before trying to start, while trying to start, once started (if it starts)

4, do you have a priming bulb if so is it soft or hard to squeeze?

3, Haven't been able to see the voltage but it's fully charged. I ran it down a bit trying to start, so I swapped it over to my old car and charged it back up again. Don't think it's the battery because when it did start, it would start after ~1s, always, never had to keep cranking to start it. Now I'll crank for 5-7 seconds and it's making no attempt to start. Cranking like crazy, very fast but nothing more.

4, Been priming it like mad, bulb will harden (not sure how hard it's supposed to be) but it get's hard-ish. If I keep on priming it will soften again a bit, and I can hear little air bubbles after a while, and then it will harden again.

Had while smoke at startup for a while before it stopped working. It was failing to start intermittently (see below) but I've been trying it for days now and it hasn't started since.

The way it goes is that it would cut out at low revs and then not start again. If I turned it off the ignition it would ALWAYS start again. I never had a no-start when I turned off the ignition myself beforehand, if that makes sense.

Could it be the ecu not completing some task? since I think turning off the key kind of completes a shutdown sequence. Or a blockage at the HP pump, or along the injector line somewhere?

Should be getting my hands on Peugeot Planet in a few days so I'll see what that says. My elm327 shows no faults (but whatever), I'm not getting any warning light's inside either. Engine and oil check's are fine.

I reset the bsi a few times too. (I think :))

The priming pumps I've had all went so hard I could no longer squeeze it. From your description it certainly sounds like you have air getting into the fuel lines and would be a likely candidate as the cause of your non start issue.

Battery is definitely fine.
So I was digging down in the back of the engine and I found a piece of rubber pipe tied on to the fuel pipe with cable ties, suggesting a leak. Took the section of line off and found nothing, weird. Anyway I put it back together (without the piece of pipe). And reprimed, this time I gave it a few really hard squeezes (getting pissed off :)) tried the engine again and it started! First time in nearly a week of constantly trying. Engine sounds perfect.

I'm wondering if either there was a blockage somewhere, or if the it needed a lot of pressure to feed the HP fuel pump.

It has started fine about 6 times since, when I take off it's fine but as soon as I stop and put it into neutral it dies.

It's not cutting out due to low revs, it's solid at 900rpm but the second it comes out of gear it just conks. There's no jumping like a mechanical or clutch issue, it's like something just tells the car to stop. The clutch FEELS fine, it's not slack, no grinding gears or anything..

You need to get it on planet/diagbox to read the codes and have a look at live data have a good read of the link below it explains a lot of stuff like how to contact a member with the relevant equipment needed A brief FAQ and Guide for New Members - Peugeot Forums

Yea I've got one in the post! Should be delivered sometime tomorrow. I'm just trying to get an old laptop ready, installing xp 32bit at the moment.

Might put myself on the map when I get it sorted as there's nobody within ~400 miles of me that has one, that I know of. I'm way down the south of Ireland

Been using a bluetooth ELM327 for the last few days but it's pretty useless. It's probably handy for certain stuff that's not fault related, I'm guessing, but not much else.

To answer my own original question about getting in the back side of the engine. I found that climbing up on to the left side of the engine and just lying on top of it seems to the the best way, I'm only ~5'5".
Been rooting around back there for hours and underneath as well, I still haven't been able to locate even one glow plug, I starting to wonder if it has any!

Kind of miss the simple spark plugs on the petrol engine, right in your face!

1.6HDI im sure glow plugs are at front and injectors at the back but glow plugs are not needed to start

you need enough speed from starter
enough fuel pressure
cam crank sync

I wasn't thinking it was a plugs issue, just mentioned it because I couldn't see them when I was back there.
They're at the back alright though, I know the general area, around the EGR but I just couldn't find them! lol..

Could you describe or post a picture of where the hand primer pump is on your car? I am having start issues with my 407SW and after a bit of reading and advice on here, it seems like it's very similar to yours and could be air in the fuel system. I can't see a priming pump.

Sorry to jump on your thread but I swapped the fuel filter and the electrical harness plug socket on the underside of the new filter is just blank / no pins. Anyone know if that is normal? New to this car so lots of questions coming up.

Here you go. It should be fairly hard. If it's squishy, then keep pumping until it gets hard.

If you don't have one then it means you have a pump in the fuel tank instead.

Brillinat. I do have one of those. Didn't twig that was it. Much obliged.
No bothers. I'm only learning myself, but a broken car seems to be the fastest way to do it! I had a 99 Almera for 9 years and it only got it's first service last year, so I was never forced to do anything! :)

I'd recommend downloading Servicebox too if you're planning on doing any work yourself.

And yes, There's NO PINS in the bottom connection of the filter. I was just had a quick check on mine there. The hole above the connector is for a water detection sensor but I've nothing connected to mine..

I can confirm that on the 1.6HDi the glow plugs are at the back. You need to move the primer, injector wiring and associate plastic carrier and the EGR pipe on the left (as you look from the front). I also removed the windscreen scuttle so I could get to the lower clip that connected the EGR pipe to the EGR. The wiring for the glow plugs are either push fit or screw fit depending on when the engine was manufactured.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. I got as far as window wipers, which wouldn't budge, when I was going down the back the last day looking for a leak.

I'd say it'd be a hefty bill to get plugs done at a dealers,.
