Just had the 2nd service done on my 2016 308 GT....that stung a little!

Anyway, it got me wondering, even though the service schedule sais the Auto gearbox oil never needs changed (Very sceptical!) has anyone here done so?

Reason I ask is that I find the gearbox performance is brilliant when fully warmed up, especially after a good long spirited drive but a little slow and slightly jerky, especially going from 3rd to 4th when cold.

Thoughts?

In the past, I have always changed ATF every 30k miles.

There are two schools of thought on auto gearbox fluid changes.

One says change, even if the manufacturer says don't. The problem with this is that small particles of brake linings can be stirred up by the fluid change, which can block some small passages and give rise to malfunctions (and with some boxes, the entire fluid cannot be changed without removing the box - so you are not doing a complete change).

The other says if the manufacturer says don't, you don't. My view is that you are less likely to get problems if you follow this one. My trusted mechanic down the lane agrees, so that's two votes.

The advice you get from people is coloured by their own experience, which is usually limited, because auto boxes are generally very reliable. I don't know of a survey which has examined the issue, so you need to make your own decision.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated. I'm certainly in the middle and undecided at the moment. I can't help but think that on one hand, by simply allowing the old oil to pour out without any agitation whatsoever (no oil flush) and replacing it with nice new, upgraded oil, including a replacement filer, is appealing and I doubt there would be many drawbacks, if any. But as you rightly point out, is it worth the risk? I'm not sure.

Plus, not so long ago, lifetime oil within auto transmissions wasn't a thing and it was recommended you did change the ATF regularly.

Would be good to hear others opinions.

A good few years ago I had an omega automatic (one of the first with the filled for life oil). The box appeared to be working fine at 80K but i decided as i was changing cam belt etc i would go the whole hog and do everything.

I had to drop the sump pan on the box as there was no drain fitted, and the oil was well discoloured and the filter mesh was a bit crudded up. I cleaned the screen and new oil and the box felt much smoother.

I think you do not notice the gradual deterioration in shift quality as it happens over a long period. Sold/gave the car to a relative a few years later and box was still going strong about 5 yrs later

I definitely think a regular change of ATF, whilst doing all you can to negate any negative side effects, can only be a good thing. Having done a bit of research into it all, 'oil for life' doesn't exist. It appears there is a distinct difference between the life of the car, and the useful life determined by the manufacturer (how long the warranty is etc.). It makes no sense to me that you could potentially own a car for 5 years and never change an oil that works hard every day.

I have a company called Mackie Transmissions who are housed nearby and have a brilliant reputation. Think a call to them is order....
