406 GTX HDI ESTATE 1997cc (2001) Manual

Car has gearbox issues but it is in Hungary ! (Family home)

Mechanic, who is working on the car, says he needs a 6 digit code off the gearbox to order the correct parts.
But after 14 years the numbers are scrubbed off.

Can anyone tell me if the numbers are specific to the car model?
Surely not every car has a separate individual gearbox code?

Thanks

Just provide the last 8 digits of the VIN (called the VIS), and one of us can look up the car's Build Code, type of gearbox and the individual serial number, using the Peugeot Service Box. Provided the gearbox has not been changed since the car was built, that data will be what is needed to get the correct parts.

Alternatively, go to Service Box and register as an independent, and you can look it up yourself.

There are 4 possible gearboxes in 406 hdi depending on age and power output there were a few changes in its lifetime :)

2001 models will have a choice of 2 but i dont know the numbers offhand the 90 hp and 110 hp are different due to different clutch systems

Hi, welcome to the club :D

The Hdi90 has a low ratio gearbox, the Hdi110 has a different gearbox as does the 2.2Hdi - so it depends on the engine output, and the position of your reverse gear.

As suggested, please post the VIN number here and someone will give you the correct number, but if you have an Hdi90 then a similar one from a 206 or something should fit :thumb:

Doh - beaten to it..!!

Its not the ratios on the 90 its a different box entirely using a push clutch and solid flywheel
110 uses pull clutch with dual mass flywheel

the 110 and 136 boxes are very similar but not the same to be honest there are 7 i can think of if you include the 2.2 engine !!

As you say later cars had a revised reverse to add to confusion

It's 110 engine. So the vin number is the only way to guarantee which type of gearbox is fitted? The car is in garage and log book is in filed away in our house, in Hungary. We left car with local mechanic and had to fly back to UK after new clutch fitted which lead to the gearbox problems.
Where is the vin on 406 cars? I can tell the mechanic to look for me.
Thanks for positive replies & help .....

New clutch was fitted over in Hungary by local mechanic who is not exactly a Peugeot main dealer but has been looking after the car for ten years. The clutch pedal link or mechanism soon failed after we got the car back , pedal went straight to the floor. Once they got the clutch pedal sorted the car refuses to go into 1st or 2nd gear. No doubt this is linked to previous gearbox removal or the guys attempt (possibly to drive the car short distance back to garage without the clutch.

Any-ways, car is in Hungary, in the garage, and will not go into 1st or 2nd gear. From the helpful replies on here I can understand now why the mechanic wants the specific gearbox number.

Many thanks to all contributors so far....

It is supposed to be under the bonnet, in the front of the engine compartment, on the cross-member.

It is also supposed to have a VIN visible at the nearside base of the windscreen.

Waiting for mechanic to send me the part numbers.
He said the problem is the 1st & 2nd gear "synchron switch" is broken.
I know that I really need the exact part numbers but does this description mean anything to anyone on here?

Hungary is not the best place to buy parts for a French car....
