How easy is it to change the front brake pads?

Why I ask, there is a strange clunking noise when I brake. The brake pads and discs have been changed, but the garage can find no problem and are not willing to investigate further.

This only happens in dry conditions and not in the wet.

It's very easy on the 107.

You clunking could be brakes, sterring or suspension. There's a smaller chanche it could be an engine or 'box mount.

Either way, get it to a reputable workshop and don't risk using it til it's fixed. The 107 is a wonderfully simple car to work on so garage #1 must be pretty dim not to suss it.

Many thanks for the reply to my question, I have had the car checked by a Peugeot dealer.

The car has had it's brake pads, discs and also front drivers side strut changed, and also the bottom rosebush changed all on the drivers side, as this is where the noise is most prominent and this has still not resolved the clunking noise.

I have a letter from the garage, who are a Peugeot delaer saying they can't find anything wrong with the car, and I have written to Peugeot , who said take it to another Peugeot dealer and let them check it out at my cost.

You mentioned the box mounts, is this the engine mounting points? or can you give an idea what those components look like.

I spent a fortune on this problem, any help would do.

Just to help us,

3. Does it happen every time you touch the brakes or just when braking hard or to a stop?

As well as the engine mount or exhaust that Chopper mentioned, and I don’t know if 107s have them, but years ago I had a clunk after a bush in an engine brace strut failed. With this, you could also get a clunk if you tapped your foot on and off the accelerator whilst driving in 1st gear.

It's a single clunk.

No!

3. Does it happen every time you touch the brakes or just when braking hard or to a stop?
Most times when you touch the brakes, but if you feather them it doesn't happen, as I said it goes away when it is wet.

I have put the car in 1st gear and rocked it back and forward, as much as I can, and there is no clunking sound heard, just to see if the engine mounts made this noise.

I have also checked the exhaust mounts, and they are OK.

This is a mystery....

I don't belive in coincidences. They 'fix' your car, and now it knocks.

Get an engineers report from the AA/RAC and if it turns out your garage have muffed up claim the cost back from them. Either way, you gotta do something cosd you can't be driving it if there is the slightest question mark over the stoppers.

I totally agree with your comments, and I have got another Peugeot dealer looking at this on Thursday.

I have made a small video of the clunking noise for them to look at, just in case the weather is wet on Thursday.

I will post the outcome on how it pans out with the garage later.

An update to the brake problem. Well it looks like the problem was caused by the brake pads were not Peugeot original parts that was fitted in the first place.

I may add the garage who fitted these was a Peugeot dealer!!!!!

The local Peugeot garage took the car out, and 1 hour later fitted the pads, and more money paid out by me to sort this problem.

I off to get my money back, for all unnecessary work that was carried out.

At my last MOT, it was advisory that I have the discs replaced and hence the pads. At the Dealer, I saw an offer for discs and pads for £199 for 307s. I asked how much they were for my 407. The answer was around the £350 mark. I asked about the offer, and they replied, "They are not Peugeot parts. If you want Peugeot parts, it will be around the £350 mark."

I'm not entirely happy with this, substitute parts should be at least as good. I mean, is there so much to pads and discs that there should be £150 difference? I doubt it.

Genuine brake parts for the 107 come from Poland, so shipping will be part of it,but fundamentally the dealers are forced to sell at cost+their authorised profit margin, so there's often not a lot of room for latitude. Pattern parts are fine if you stick to reputable brands. A lot of the uber-cheap ebay brake parts come from the far east and are cheap because they don't meet EU standards.

As a comparison, genuine discas and pads for my 308 were £120 for the parts, and the discs were expensive as the discs are unique to the 110 model, but chuck in 1.5hrs labour + VAT and I'd have been looking at north of £250 if the dealer had fitted them as well. So I did it instead.

front brakes

stick to my old 309 jalopy,checked prices out front discs£6.52 each,pads £7.98.and i will fit them myself....:thumb:checked eurocarparts for 107 front discs,£41.00/pads£19.00,thats some mark up for maindealers....

I see real cheap kit all over the place, but never touch it for fear that it's non-EU market kit, of even counterfeit copies of well known brands. My pert bottom is too precious to risk on braking components of dubious provenance.

Yeah, dealer 107 discs aren't exactly expensive, but aren't exactly cheap either, but quality pattern ones are much cheaper, such as Brembo etc. The favoured set up for many is standard/Brembo dics with new formula Greenstuff pads.

Or if you think the Peugeot parts for the 107 are expensive you can be guaranteed the Citroen one are cheaper. The parts are the exact same on the C1.

i tend to get most stuff from gsf,andrew page,the stuff is made in poland etc,never had any problems,customers etc seem very happy..
