Hey, I'm Sam.

18 years old a currently driving this...

I used to have this as my first car...

Peugeot 406 L 1.9TD.

The focus used to be my Mums and I let her persuade me to trade my 406 in for a new car for her and I'd have the Focus.
Problem is...
  • The 1.6 engine in the Focus is terrible (tiresome on long journeys and gutless low down, great further up the revs though),
  • It drinks fuel,
  • The cars bodywork is terrible (botheres me more than I thought it would),
  • The brakes fade quickly which is worrying on the motorway if you ever have to slow down from motorway speeds etc (80-0 and the last 20mph the brakes are useless, this is normal for focus brakes),
  • I find the car uncomfotble to drive on long journeys,
  • And to top it off the money I've had to spend on the front suspension (My Mum destroyed it) I could have used to get my 406 fixed, lowered and with some nice alloys.
I have £2000 plus the Focus, and any other money I can scrape together in the next few months to buy a new car.

Cars on my list are...

Peugeot 406 HDi110 SE or Executive
MK3 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDDi Ghia X
MK3 Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi 115 Ghia/Zetec

Thing is I have found out that the 407 is silly cheap to insure compared to the 406 and still much cheaper compared to the Mondeos!

I'm looking at a 407 1.6HDi SE.
I love the front end, the rear is growing on me slowly.

But I just want to clear a few things up before I put one on my list...

If I DeFap the car before I get it remapped, after the remap will the car look for the FAP again?

Once I have DeFapped the car, can I remove the Eloys fluid tank, pipes and everything that goes along with it?

Whats the chances of getting a car with Cruise Control on it?

How serious is the ball joint issue? How often should they be changed? Was there every a recall to sort the problem out?

Can you get a solid flywheel conversion? How much? Where From? How long should I expect a DMF to last?

How long do the clutches last on these? How do they handle a remap?

What sort of mileage do these engines start giving up? If I get one about 100k will I get another 50-60k out of it?

I have done a littl searching but lots of questions I'm left a little vauge about. Any help or advice is welcome :D
And I'm sure there will be more questions to come

Cheers,
Bailes.

I have the 407 1.6hdi s , it has been defapped and remapped , you`re looking at 146bhp and 280ft of torque when mapped ,
most ball joints have been updated watch your service history ,
se comes with cruise or you can add it ,
why would you want to take eloys tank off ,thats just drawing attention to it , your codes will be erased so nothing will show on dash,
mine had 52k on it 6 months ago and now has 77k with no issues yet,
i think clutches come in around £600/700 with DMF , as far as i know theres no solid conversion for the 1.6 but it should be soon ,
if your looking at a 407 with around 80-100k , i would be looking for one thats throwing up Particle filter problems so you can bargain seller down then just remove it.
Hope some of that helps.:D

Just what I wanted to hear :D
I don't want to get one with the DPF fault already because when I plan to get this car I'm going to be doing an apprentaship and will need the car 100% from the day I get it.
Although I will eventually plan to remove it :)

How laggy do you find your 1.6HDi?
I drove a Volvo C30 1.6D (same engine??) and it was pretty laggy, but keep it on boost and it pulled like a train! :D

I hate Faps with a passion, and I've never even had one

I loved my 406, so simple! No ECU etc.

Just want to get rid of the FAP and the DMF, I'l be a little happier then

Sorry if I'm being a pain...

How could I get hold of Peugeot planet to enable and disable bits and bobs? (Mainly just to have a play).
Is the Lexia system on ebay as good?

Cruise is an optional extra - not all SE models have cruise control.

I would expect one of that mileage to have had new clutch/DMF by now, and probably more than one set of ball joints if the mileage between changes is to be believed.

You mention you're 18... and insurance is silly cheap.... just how much do you call silly cheap, I can't see it being that cheap for a car of this spec and your age?? and don't forget, you will run the risk after remap!

A 406 2.0 HDi 110 with a remap, lowered, exhaust, panel filter and some audio gear is £1750 a year.

My Focus currently is a 1.6 Petrol LX with audio gear and an uprated air box is £1320.

A Peugeot 407 1.6HDi SE with audio gear, remap, panel filter, exhaust and lowering comes out at £1410 :)

Well it isn't silly cheap, but I suppose for your age it isn't too bad.

I got my first policy December 2009 when it was much cheaper for my age. Quinn direct kept me on the old prices :)

You've managed to pull off a good deal there somehow... and are those prices fully comp, or TP only?

I've just looked at Quinn, and they are ridiculously expensive quoted £1800 when I'm paying less than £500 for identical cover.

Yeh i was amazed they kept me on the old prices to be honest. I was getting quotes circa £3000 so was panicing, then my renewal come through at £1200! Add a few mods and £1320, was well happy :D

They went into administration, so another company took them over. So they've gone from the best for young drivers to one of the worst!

I'm only third party though. If I crash I crash, just get another cheap 406 to tide me over.
