Hi, I have a Expert 2.0 hdi on an 02 plate. At the end of October 2009 the head gasket failed but only slightly. The engine never overheated as it was only loosing water slowly. At the time this started it developed a problem where the engine on occasion would not restart when hot. The engine just turns over and the whole van shakes (like a petrol missfiring). I had the head gasket done by a garage I usually use, Everything is fine excpet I still have the intermittent problem. Example I did an 80 mile journey, all was fine. I arrived at my destination got out for 2 - 3 minutes, got in turned key engine started fine, reversed 10 feet got out for 5 minutes to unload, when got back in wouldnt start. Left it fo half an hour to cool, was fine. Its had new cam sensor / crank sensor, airflow sensor, temperature sensor, new glow plugs as well as all the other stuff involved in replacing head gasket. Its been back to the garage but it never does it when they have it. It shows no fault on their computer. Its starts all the time when cold, and 98% of the time when hot. Anyone got any clue? Thanks:mad:

any clues?

I've been having similar hot start problems with my Expert recently. Did you, or anyone else find anything out about what might be causing it? I've had tests done at several garages, including a diesel specialist, and neither can find out as the problem hasn't happened when it's been with them,
Cheers

Found this post might help

This is a common fault, it is usually caused by a worn injector pump. Way to check is to get the engine up to temperature, switch off and then play a cold hose pipe over the injector pump for a few mins. Then try starting it again- if it starts easily you can be fairly sure the pump is worn. The cold water shrinks the pump casing ,this allows the pump to develop enough hydraulic pressure to inject a decent start quantity of diesel.A good fuel shop can recondition them despite what most people say

Hi yes I did find the problem, after many visits to the garage, it was the starter motor. I managed to get it to go into fault condition while I was at the garage and we kept turning it over with an industrial jump pack attached as well, eventually the starter actually caught fire. Replaced the starter motor an has been fine ever since, starts first time. Hope this helps

I was going to say starter motor solenoid as it happened to me but would not turn over just blew the fuse each time.

Shortly after that the turbo started cutting out at exactly 70mph, another common problem I believe, turned out to be a seized waste gate, an hours labour and no parts in the garage sorted it.

Hi
I'm having the same problems with my 06 1.9D it starts fine when cold but when hot trys to turn over sluggishly but its just like not enough power in battery, leave it too cool down for 1/2 hour and it then turns over easy and starts.
Can't see it being a worn injector pump as that would turn over easy enough but just not start.

Any other ideas or anybody had the same problem.

Many Thanks
Dave
