I'm going to have to change my exhaust on my 2001 expert 1.9d van and can get a stainless steel one made up at a local company alot cheaper then a steel exhaust from a local kwikfit type garage.
The query I have is that the stainless one wont have a cat on it but I have been told that the van doesn't need a cat and that it wont make any difference to the emissions when it comes to the mot.
Has anyone any thoughts on this?

Get a stainless cat-back exhaust and problem solved. No?

If cats didn't make any difference to emissions surely manufacturers wouldn't bother installing them in the first place?

I found this quote on a diesel tuning specialist site--"Diesel engines in the United Kingdom do not require a catalytic converter to pass the MOT test, which consists of a simple smoke density test".
Is this not true?
