I have just bought a 2003 307 2.0 petrol has very little history so decided to chceck cam belt with a view to changing it for peace of mind.
I took the top cover off to inspect belt which is in ok condition but no signs of being changed, i also started car up with cover off and noticed that on the exhaust cam sprocket that there seems to be some sort of insert inside the sprocket which seems to move loosely when running in turn it seems to have been hitting the cover over time.
Does anyone have any idea what the insert is or if it should be fixed inside the sprocket and not loose? Thanks .

The insert is a vibration damper and it always ends up coming loose just pull it off it will run fine without it you need a whole new pulley to replace it and they are not cheap.
