Hi I've got an 02 2.0, 90 hdi sw. I filled the fuel tank full at the beginning of the month and it was OK no problems what so ever. It got to halfway on the gauge then when I came to start the car the needle shot up and went off the gauge. It stayed there while I did my running around, switched the car off went to it about an he later and the needle had dropped back and was fine after that.
Came to the car today the fuel level is at quarter of a tank now and it was fine when I started to drive. I arrived at my destination and the needle shot up off the gauge. I switched the car off the needle fell back to 3/4, turned it on again and it went off the gauge again.
Has anyone come across this before? If so any help would be appreciated.

I'd check the connection to the sender unit in the tank first. Disconnect it and see how it affects the gauge. Spray the connectors with some switch cleaner. Maybe even take the sender unit out of the tank to make sure there is no damage or corrosion to the unit.
