Car hasn't missed a beat up until this point. Taking mrs to work this morning, after about 20 mins the temperature sh*t itself and shot from the normal temperature straight into the red zone and started beeping to stop. So pulled up and then the anti pollution fault flashed on dash. Checked the radiator pipes and top one was hot and bottom was cold, fan was blowing cold hard onto the engine after turning off so I'm a little stumped, and didn't want to pay through the nose for inconclusive tests. Help would be appreciated haha.

Sorry can't help with your problem as i have next to zero car knowledge. But just as some advice i'm with the rac and pay £30 a year and have had them out 4 times and each time got them to read fault codes (after anti pollution message) which have helped me diagnose what the problem was and save on expensive diagnostic tests saving me lots of £££.

It is better to have the codes read via planet software though so definitely try and find someone using the map on this forum.

Or failing that even an OBD2 reader would be handy.

Just as an example on this my car flashed up anti pollution and lost power on the dual carriageway about 4 weeks ago, got rac to come out and read codes and they related to thermostat fault. I then posted the codes on here and it ended up being the temp. sensor which cost me a tenner. Guaranteed if i'd have taken it to a garage it would have cost me £40 for a diagnostic plus probably a new thermostat housing.

Anti pollution fault is a generic fault message which could have several causes. It needs to be diagnosed to get any fault codes and possibly live data to point to the real cause. Anything else would just be guess work.
Many members have the right diagnostic kit and will run a diagnostic session for a few beer tokens.

My gti has done this and a few others too. It was needing a replacement coolant temp sensor. STOP engine warning and the coolant temp rite up into the red.

Better than the AA then:

I've known a national breakdown firm say that a customer's high pressure fuel pump has failed because that's what the code said, only for it to be an issue with the tank lift pump - one was a blocked filter, the other was weak current to the pump due to an old battery.

Danj this is spooky but the same thing has happened to me this morning (minus anti pollution)!!! started the car from cold and the temp gauge shot to maximum and 'STOP ENGINE TEMP HIGH'.

I asked my father in law to come round and he said he'd had the exact same happen to him, he reckons his was due to a loose battery terminal causing it to go haywire. So i tightened the terminals and drove to work with no more issues. Strange.

How did you get on?

To be honest Gibbo RAC have been no better in this regard. They told me the head gasket had blown and i should part ex asap when it was infact the timing chain?!!

But i just take a picture of the codes on their laptop and then look up myself online/on here.

Btw don't suppose you know where the air con pressure switch is located on a 1.4 207 2008 do you?

Did a code read and came back with the coolant sensor. Sensor was reading 141 degrees in a cold engine haha, now to replace it!

It is and it isn't lol

Gotta move couple bits out the way and be careful not to drop the clip.

Easier when u remove the battery and battery tray to give some more access.
