Is there a list of conditions available that bring the MIL lamp on for a 2002 Expert with the 2 litre HDi diesel engine?

Van runs fine, but the MIL is on continuously. It does go out for half a second a couple of seconds after the engine starts, but then comes back on again.

Light is on because of a permanent fault somewhere without plugging it in to read the fault you would be chasing your tail :)

Really could be anything even just a loose connection.

Yes unfortunately tail chasing it is. It is a mate's van and he is a plasterer so it isn't in exactly pristine condition. :rolleyes:

He has bought a replacement and was all for scrapping it, but I thought if I can sort the MIL out it might be worth selling on. Don't like to see vehicles crushed when there is still life in them.

It has been sorned so it won't be visiting any local diagnostics, and sadly it isn't worth spending much money on it.


If there was such a list, it'd be a pretty long one, and a list which wouldn't offer much in the way of help.

If I unplug a sidelight bulb, I get the EML light on for 36-48 hours.
Ah not what I am used to then. We have a 2 BMW diesel engined cars with a similar Bosch common rail system and there are only 3 things that bring up the MIL on the 2002 model (low pre-delivery fuel pressure, defective HP rail sensor and defective throttle demand pot) and a further 2 on the 2005 car (defective/disconnected MAF and an open circuit in either the EGR or boost temperature sensor wiring).

I was hoping it would be a similar story with the van. Worth having another bash at it though when I get some spare time.

If I get a result I'll post it up - might help someone else.

There are way more than 2 or 3 things that will bring on the engine light in ANY car

You are simply listing the most common reasons for the bmw faults not the ONLY things they all run on the same basic systems regardless of badge as bosch and siemens make most of the fuel systems used on every car.

Yes apologies I will add it under my name. I am in Bordon Hampshire.

There are way more than 2 or 3 things that will bring on the engine light in ANY car.
Funnily enough not on our cars, which I do know quite well having owned one of them for 15 years, and also having the diagnostic kit for. ;)

I can assure you the list for the lamp coming on is complete.

I have experience of BMW cars too and i KNOW there is more than you say that will light the engine light.

As i say the systems are the same basic principles regardless of the badge.

Spot on - it was a bad connection at the LP fuel pressure sensor plug.

I haven't done much with BMW cars but the Rover 75 has the BMW M47R diesel engine fitted and that is where the list comes from.

Don't take my word for it though the information will be out there on the net somewhere - the earlier Bosch ECM is NNN100720 and the later one NNN500340.

Interestingly the earlier version doesn't even light up the MIL as a self check on start up -that has confused a few people. :rolleyes:

Thanks to all for the replies - my daughter still has her Expert so it probably won't be too long before I am in need of help again. :thumb:
