Any experts on electric problems out there?

Problem: I connected a separate battery directly to the tail lights of a trailer while it was hooked up to a Peugeot 406 1999 petrol. By mistake, I reversed to plus and minus leads to the tail lights. This cause a spark and apparently a short circuit in the car.

Shortly after starting the car, a ground wire (yellow/green) leading into one of two units that are attached to the underside of the BSI, melted, and a 30 A fuse in the engine compartment blew (second row from front).

What are the two units under the BSI?

Is this a hopeless problem to fix?

This number is written under the windshield and on the metal plate under the hood:

From your VIN number I looked up the DAM (RPo, date of production) number: 08253

This number i entered in SEDRE to find the attached electric diagrams.

The blown fuse in the engine compartment is MF10 "Lighting" (30 A) in component BM34 (the engine fuse box).

The units in the second picture seem to be component 2400 ("sidelamp day running lights line relay") and 2401 ("dipped beam day running lights relay"). In the attached "08253 - Day running lamps - wiring.pdf" you can see the colors and positions of the wires into the 10-way connector. There are two yellow/green ("JV") wires, one at socket 2A and one at 2B. They connect each of the relay coils to earth.

It seems like the short circuit is somewhere in the 2400 relay, but maybe (also) in the 2401 relay. You could start off by removing them.

You're welcome :) You will be able to fix it, don't worry.

What is exactly the current symptom? Does it crank and start? Or is it just the (head/tail) lights that don't work?

Thanks for the encouragement. I replaced the relay (photo) and the fuse.

Jubilation: the car was like new.

The black box was indeed the relay for the lights. The relay circuit marked 1 and 2 (85 and 86) was shorted (zero resistance). The car worked fine otherwise.
