hi all iv just bought a 1.6hdi sw it runs perfectly but iv noticed some diy pipe work. someone has removed a pipe which runs between a air pipe and the head and run a pipe to a cylinder and air filter. has any one got a idea what it does and why they would have changed it?

Most likely engine is a bit of a heavy breather and blew oil into intake so they have done this to stop it smoking
Thats exactly what a mechanic said today he rekons it breathing abit of oil and it would have been smoking he said empty the canister every month and dont worry about it

its an oil catch can,
find them on ebay here,

Oil Catch Can 15mm Fittings Universal Breather Tank Crank Case Breather Square | eBay

It stops the oil going back into the induction cycle.

Helps maintain the turbo and other bits n bobs. nothing to worry about its probs making your engine last that bit longer, was thinking of doing it to mine.

empty the pot now and again, its cathing used oil thats floating in the air around the crank. (crank case breather) the filter is just so it can breath,
