Hello, this problem has only just developed. All the other gears are fine, i can get into 5 th easy but getting out is terrible, the gearstick is very loose when in 5th ive gone into reverse accidently a few times trying to pull out its that bad. I took to a good mechanic he says its a fault in the gearbox which i wasnt hoping for. The linkage rod from the gear lever seem loose so i might have a look underneath maybe changing the nylon or rubber bushes may help to stiffen the gearstick up. The mechanic said id lose 5 th gear eventually. So its either run it until its knackered or get a scrap gearbox the vans a 56 plate in good condition. Done 101,000 miles runs well seems a shame to get rid. Would it be a bearing in the gearbox or a syncromesh problem in 5th ?

Not sure, if you are sure everything in the linkage and control plate on top of the gearbox is OK then the most likely fault is the nut at the end of the mainshaft securing 5th syncromesh has come loose. If there is an end cover to the gearbox it would be worth taking it off to see whether the nut is loose as it might just need tightening.
Hopefully someone else will have more idea of what is likely to be wrong with this gearbox type.

Well ive took the van to a gearbox specialist. It is an internal fault as another mechanic said the same but its fixable at a cost of £300.00 He seems to think theres a spring which has either broke off or come off inside, so he has to strip the gearbox down to get at it then re assemble. It needs doing as it could cause even more damage if left alone.

Gearbox has been fixed now. He said it was a spring that had come off the selector fork. Hes never seen this happen before but at least its sorted and didnt need another gearbox.
