Hopefully picking up my first ever pug tomorrow, 1.6 petrol 307. The bodywork wasn't in the best of conditions. It doesn't bother me loads as i bought it mainly for practicality, family car reasons. However i have always taken pride in what i drive so i'd like to try n tidy it up as much as possible.

So the car is black (I've never owned a black car) so whats the best process for me to clean and try to restore the black shine it should have to it. I've used a clay kit before on my old car to great effect but i'm wondering if theres any kind of black resoration products out there that people could recommend based on experience.

If you can get hold of some (as is only sold to trade normally) have had some great results with Autosmart Mirror Image (ebay has it listed). It is a polish with quite a high cutting action so is good at reviving tired paintwork just don't use it too often :)

When you say isn't the best do you mean it has lots of swirl marks, or has it faded?

If swirled, the only way to get rid is to machine polish. You can use a dual action polisher like me to avoid heat damage. If this is not an option for you, something like Autobrite cherry glaze may do the job.

Great product IMO, but there is only so much you can do as this just fills in the marks, doesn't remove them. Cover it up with a good wax and it may last 6-8 weeks, but after that it will need reapplication of it will look dull again.

As for specialist black stuff maybe black hole?

Paint must be quite good to start with though, so maybe only after machining it. Also, though I've always liked it, some people find it difficult to get on with.

Faded paint is another issue altogether and will, if bad, require machining. Even then, thickness readings should be taken first to ensure you don't polish the paint away:eek: The only way not to is to use the Meguirs DA system, for which you need a dual action machine polisher and thier own kit, which is very good, but the pads are awful quality. I've killed two doing one car and I've had one explode in use.

You can use something like Meguirs ultimate compound (which you can get from Halfords) and work hard by hand, but the finish will never be as good as a machine.

Well i only had a quick once over when taking a look at the car cos priority was ensuring mechanically sound and no dodgy knock or bumps. I'll be able to get a much better idea when i get it back home n give it an initial normal shampoo'd clean, then i'll try get some photos up to seek proper advice. From memory there was one area whoch looked faded the rest just looked a bit uncared for and there was a scuff mark on bumper - parking jobby.

Thanks for the links and info on those products i'll certainly take a look at them n hopefully have her restored back to a relatively shony black beauty.

Post up some shots whenever you can in good light and we can all thrash it out here, but you'll be surprised at what you can do by hand. Obviously having a machine saves time and effort and produces a better finish when used correctly, but I always glaze by hand just cos it feels nicer under cloth.

Machine polishing can take paint like this

There are still some swirls on the door, but they are really deep. Removing them would mean sacrificing loads of paint. In 12 months time, it'll probably look like that again with the use it gets. Sometimes you just can't get it 100%

It's my Mums Ebony Black Freelander btw

I had a black (well greyish as it had too much sun) jeep I used black colour magic and with a nice day and some beers it came up like new!
But I did take a whole day doing it, o and wear latex gloves as it Stains your hands

Picked up the car today, well this evening, so no chance to get decent photos just yet but I noticed in the boot the previous owners have left a bottle of black magic. Nice, so I will give that a little shot to see how that works out.

I'll get some good photos up tomorrow hopefully and diagnose best method for restoring her black shiny coat.

Can anyone recommend a decent interior shampoo also? I've always auto-glym and it does work great, just wondered if theres any other suggestions?

Best way of cleaning the seats is a wet vac to suck the dirt out as it doesn't leave any dirty water marks.
I used a spray bottle with some warm water and some (clothes) washing gel,
Spray it on give it a rub with a soft brush, spray some more and leave for 5 mins,
Use wet vax to suck the dirty water out :thumb:
Do it on a nice day so the seats dry better...

I will look out for the pics :)

Do you know what, I never even thought of that. I've got an old VAX - the orange thing at the back of my shed somewhere so I'll have to dig that out.

I've just used autoglym interior shampoo this evening cos I'm sick of the stale perfume/smoke smell in the car, boy was it dirty. Will apply another lot at the weekend when I give the whole car a proper wash n polish and try the wet vac method too. By time I get home from work its always dark though so no pics of exterior yet.

Ok so I got chance to give her a good clean as follows:
• Rinse with cold water all over to remove top debris/dirt
• Shampoo and rinse using 2 bucket method with Autoglym shampoo/conditioner
• Dried using cotton cloth allover
• Polish using Autoglym super resin polish
• All windows polished using Autogylm Glass polish
(I got all the Autogylm stuff in a package as a present :) )
So here's how she turned out:

And here's all the problem areas:

Touch-up pen marks on bonnet (there are 2)

Front bumper scuff

Other side of front bumper scuff

Front passenger wing/arch scratch (there are scratches on all arches apparently had arch extension things on at one point)

So verdict/thoughts?
She has buffed up well but still doesn't look at 'black' as I would like. Perhaps the black magic that was mentioned would help? Any advice for trying to get rid of the nasty touch up pen stains?
I have some demon shine kicking about as well - can this be used on top of the polish finish or will it not really achieve anything?

Apologies for very pic heavy thread.

Just a quick one - following from my super clean yesterday - it decided to rain. But that's not all bad cos it means I woke to see my car with pretty little beads of water all over it this morning. Beautiful:

That it not a result to be sniffed at ;)
Looks very nice. Only way to sort the touching in marks is to shave the paint down with a titanium block. The dodgy paint spray job could be wet sanded and machined back up again. The front wing glue residue can be removed with autosmart tardis

Hmm just having a read up on the titanium block method theyre expensive little things but guess lasting a lifetime is fair do's. so i'd have to use titanium block to scrape away the paint to begin with - then go back to normal scratch repair process? Primer, touching in paint etc?? If thats the case will just leave it for now as its still fairly cold outside and they dont bug me too much just yet.
The autosmart stuff says to be careful if used on plastics - and the hlue is onthe front wing - correct me if i'm wrong but the front wings ok these cars are plastic?? As least it felt like thst to me. Do you still think it would be ok? Cheers

Yep, the wings are plastic but I've not heard of a problem here. All you need to do is soak some makeup applicators in Tardis then stick to the offending areas. Give it about 15 mins then pull them off. Repeat the process until the glue is removed. If you search some more you should find pro detailers using that method to remove badge residue and number plate stickies on plastic bumpers too. With the block, the idea is that you effect your repair with the touch up as has already been done in this case then after drying you scrape the surface flush with the surrounding paint. The only danger is that you may strike through the paint by applying too much pressure so if you can practice on a spare panel you'll get the hang of it and be confident on your own car.

If you are still worried about Tardis, try Auto Finesse ObliTARate, which is very wax and plastic safe, but much more expensive by volume. There are other tar and glue removers, but these are often talked about as being the best. I've used both and others too, the only reason I went back to Tardis is cost per 5 litres

Thats brilliant, thanks for all the advice. Really helpful, will definitely try the autosmart stuff and then can a spare panel from local scrappy n practice the titanium block treatment when i get the pennies to buy one. Cheers
