I've just stripped down my front offside driveshaft and replaced the intermediate bearing. Upon re-assembly I notice the endcap is missing from the internal spring (must've lost it, searched everywhere, it'll turn up when the shaft's back on the car). The endcap / spring appears to push the CV joint apart, when it's off the car the boot keeps it together, when it's on the car I expect it pushes the shaft tight and removes endplay.

Does anyone know if the spring is important? Do you think it is wise to leave it off? I know car manufacturers are not known for fitting unnecessary parts but maybe it's there to help factory fitting or something (he says hopefully).
