I have a 63 plate 2008 with 50k miles. I've just been told the catalytic converter is cracked. The garages has only linked to diagnostics. They've quoted £900+ but have said Peugeot will pay 50% as a goodwill guesture. They said driving hasn't caused the issue. I don't know how it could be cracked. Does anyone know if there is an issue or am I just unlucky. Thanks

Have they visually inspected the cat? Are they able to show you the damage?
no - they hooked it up to diagnostics and said they could just hear it was cracked. Not sure how it happened with only driving short local distances. No impacts. And thought it strange Peugeot would offer to pay 50% without me asking any questions.

I'd tread with caution.
Second opinions are always a wise idea, especially when a lump of money like £450 is involved.
The "good will gesture" sounds a little bizarre to me. It kind of sounds like they're saying ", Peugeot are stumping up half of the bill, so you pay us £450 and you're getting a good deal, having it fixed a lot cheaper than it should etc". There may be something really trivial (eg, sensor malfunction) that causes similar readings on a diagnostics, but costs a fraction of your quoted bill.
Or they may be genuine? That's why a second opinion is helpful.
Were there any problems with the car prior to it being looked at by the garage, or is it in for routine servicing or MOT?
