I am in Devon at the moment, had no problems

For about 100mls pulling a caravan, then going up hill

On the 380 the temp gauge went into

The red & dash light said stop.

Managed to get over the hill & cool down

Going down hill, as been ok since, I did have air

Con on, do the cooling fans kick in although

The air con is on. I don't think the cooling fan

Kicked in. Is the a simple way of checking

Have got to travel back Sunday.

Would any one have any info regarding

This, thanks

Maybe one off, 40 years ago as a petrol jockey at a garage one of the mechanics said "towing knackers a car."
Check there is water and it is circulating and the radiator is as hot as the engine, squeeze the top hose to dispell any trapped air. In traffic check without AC check the fan starts in front of the rad when the engine is up to temp.
If all OK and overheating continues impeller could have sheared off water pump.

Turning on the AC will set the fan to low speed IIRC, and certainly when moving slowly the AC will be useless if the fan isn't working.

What was the oil temperature like? I find this gives a good indication of how hard the engine is working.

Pretty extreme conditions, so could be a one-off.

Temperature

The temperature was the same coming
Down the motorway, oil temp bit above
Average as it always is pulling a caravan

But goin up very steep incline ad to change
Down in the gears with a/c on, driving
Around Torquay in the hot weather no
Van on the back about. 90 left running
Fans did not kick in. At what temp should
They kick in.

Thanks

I'm sorry I can't find any data, on what temperature the fans should start.
The only data I have is that the thermostat is opening at 83C.
Try to leave the car idling with A/C off and the internal cabin fan off, and monitoring the temp gauge. Maybe after a little drive so the car is hot. You should hear the fan start, if it is working. Hope you find the problem.

The fans can be activated with Planet - is there someone near where you are that can check - for piece of mind?

As RWB says, big hills, very hot day, pulling a caravan - hope it is a one off.

I had almost exactly the same problem!
towing a caravan, bad traffic on M5/M6 water
and oil temp went up and up!
water eventually got to the red and dash said STOP.
So I did, 20 minutes later drove off and temp went down
all seemed ok till got stuck in traffic when it went up again.

My fan isn't kicking in.

My air-con needs regassing so I'm going to try that first

The "experts" are telling me that the fan isn't working
because of a leak in the air-con system.
Will get leak fixed and air-con regassed tomorrow and
see what happens.
Tried to regass today and, for the short while that the gas stayed in,
everything else seemed to be working fine.

When the air con is operating normally the radiator cooling fan may run.

If the air con is not gassed up then the system does not allow the air con to be operated, and you can observe that the fan is not running when you expect it to be.

If the water temperature is too hot then the radiator cooling fan should run. This is unrelated to air con system.

Therefore if the problem is over heating then the air con is a red herring.

Cooling

I had the air con on full going up telegraph hill of M5 to torquay on a hot day.

Does that mean my cooling fan was on or do they have a faster speed when it starts to get hot? No problem with my air con fan on when working.

Thanks

Temperature sensor

Any one tell me where the temperature sensor is located, took air filter out

Could not see it any where, just thought I would try & take lead of and see if fan came on.

Was told today there are 3 different relays on these fans, 1. Slow fan

2. A/C

3. Fast

my air con condenser is knackered! huge leak!
We forced the fan on via software it does work!
but it won't run of it's own accord.
Without the caravan my car never gets hot enough for it
to matter.
I can't really afford to spend hundreds on a new condenser,
I think I'm going to wire a switch in to turn the fan on manually.

Fan relay

Thinking of trying to change fan relay, there is only one relay does this control

All 3 speeds on the fan. Don't want to replace fan and find it's the relay.

Help appresiated

Relay

There is a relay on the right side of the radiator under a plastic cowling,

Have read on the foram that people have changed there relays.

Don't know if this is my problem as it works with A/C. On
