Turning left, seems to be coming from the passenger side.

Any suggestions on what it could be and how to check greatly appreciated :)

could be the start of the bottom ball joint failing.

Mine does that occasionally when I put full right hand lock and set off.

Garage checked it and there is a little play in the N/S ball joint but nothing to worry about yet.

If a ball joint is gone it will do it all the time!
Most likely to be the cv joint.

Mine doesn't because it hasn't gone, just on the way.
I thought a cv joint clicked when it has worn rather than clunked

Thanks chaps.

Well, three almighty clunks this morning coming off the drive, and the mystery noise has largely disappeared...

...I'll see if I can get it checked out...

So it was the ball joint

I bought two off of ebay. They are sealed units and prone to failure through bad design so I would think ebay is probably the way to go.

Looking like it.

There are at least three different variety of part.

The cheap eBay ones use a plain roller bearing, and they come with or without a rubber seal over the bearing. These are about £15.

The proper OEM part is made by SKF and uses a special 'carb' bearing. Euro has these for about £60.

Then there are branded aftermarket parts, and I don't know what kind of bearing they use.
