I can't remember when my belt was changed and neither can my mechanic. I'm fairly sure it was probably around the 95K mark, though it could have been around 80K too, I don't know. My mileage is now 160K. I'm doing less mileage nowadays, it used to be about 12K a year, but in the last couple of years about 8K.

My mechanic reckons I'm probably good for another 20K but what do you guys think? The cost of the labour to do the job will be more than the value of my car so I really don't want to have do it if it's safe for a while.

Is it something you could change yourself?

I’ve replaced the cam belt on my 307 twice now. Once at 110k and again at 208k.

It’s currently on 225k miles and the next change will be at 290k.

You could always inspect the belt, but that’s not going to be 100% accurate and doesn’t take into account other parts (water pump, tensioner, etc.).

90k between changes...thats a lot...
I change mine on my HDI 206 every 40-50k... wouldnt trust them over 60k
If your not doing the mileage at least once every 3-4 yrs
As to the cost...its a gamble..I would say spend the money and have it done if you like the car... Or drive it till it breaks which could be several years and then through it away...

Thanks Alex and sid. Definitely not something I'd have any clue about how to change, nor do I have the tools. But since you changed yours after 110K and then again just under another 100K, doesn't that bode well for mine? Even if mine was changed at 80K, another 100K puts it at 180K and I'm currently at 160K?

On my old 307 2.0 HDI 110, I used to change the belt and tensioner etc every 80K and waterpump every second belt (160K) and never had any issues in the 260K+ miles I drove the car for

After my car was finished getting its new clutch yesterday at Mr Clutch, I asked them about my cambelt, half expecting them to say it needs doing since I got the impression from them that they were fishing for more work as they had told me about other things that needed repairs. However, he told me it needs doing every 96K and said I'm good until I get to at least 176K.

Thats the OFFICIAL figures reality is way different :)

We had belts fail at around 85-90k on taxis and they were not officially due either by mileage or age so we started doing them at 80k to avoid issues.

Timing belt intervals are all based on guesswork some engines NEED them done like NFU engines always fail after around 80k where older 8 valve engines can do way more miles than they should.

My v6 espace is on 130k miles and i have never changed the belt because its a pain to do but if it fails i have a complete spare engine with new belt to fit so im not worried :)

At the end of the day it depends mainly on the engine and if there is a history of belt failures on that particular engine then its best done early.

Same basic engine as my old 307 in would go for the 80K interval

Good thing with the 8 valve 2 litres is that IF the belt breaks you can fix it very cheaply anyway as it only breaks the rockers in the head no bent valves no piston damage just replace rockers new belt and your on your way again so not really worth worrying with these.

We bought a 306 HDI years ago with a broken belt and when we arrived to collect the guy asked if we had a truck coming i said no we are driving it away he said it needs an engine we said it will be running in 2 hours :)

It was and he was shocked how quick we fixed it when garage told him it needed new engine.

Hah, excellent. Well that's good news then. Mine is the 2.0 HDi 90, same as patspiercing was also asking about. Are ours 8 valve then, the same as you described?
