Hi,

im sorry in advance because i bet this gets asked so many times.

my partner has passed her test and we have been looking at the 207's, fiesta's, corsa's etc, imo the 207 wins by looks, but i would really like some owners advice regarding the petrol engines,

whats the best petrol engine in these 207's for reliability? and when viewing one, is there any common faults i should be looing out for? i read Head Gaskets can be common,

many thanks
Archie

Hi and welcome...yes its been asked before...have a look at the search function and type in 'buying a 207' lots of info on there or look at the '207' forum for issues with particular models

Head gasket issues are mainly on the older engines but its not really a big deal corsas are much worse in that respect :)
later engines can be troublesome in many different areas though so it really depends what age of car you are looking at

I've seen a 2010 model 1.4 8v verve 55k miles for 3k from a dealer. I would rather get a later model.

Not sure by the performance figures if the 8v will be sluggish compared to a 16v.

I can only go by my own experience but I had a 207 1.4 16v from new and I kept it for 5 years from 2007 to 2012. It covered 58k during that time. While I would have to say that the 207 overall, in all its aspects is nowhere near as good as the 208 I now have (2016 from new) my own particular 207 was brilliant and the engine was as sweet as a nut and I had no problems at all with it. Between 2012 and 2016 I had a 207cc which I also thought was a great car but that had the 1.6 BMW/Peugeot engine which did have problems but which fortunately I didn't experience.

If it wasn't for the fact that some of the early 208 three-pot engines had a few problems I would recommend you spend just a little bit more and get an earlier version of the 208. It's a much better car and if the engine was made in France as opposed to Slovakia (where the problems originated due to lax tolerances) the engine would be fine. You can tell from the car's Vin number where the engine was built.

I'm not sure if the 207 1.4 8v is the same as the 1.4 8v I had in my 206 (2001) If it is the same I found that to be a good nippy little engine too, but I much preferred the 16v.

Hope this helps.

PS: As I understand it most of the problems under the 207 bonnet were not to do with the engine itself (apart from the 1.6 BMW thing) but with the ancillaries....water ingress into the ECU and fuse box for example. All those sort of problems were sorted with the 208.

Try having a look on ebay and Gumtree, you won't get the same comeback you would with a reputable dealer, but might get a much better deal. You pay your money and take your choice......

I would vouch for the 1.6 thp. As long as you have the full service history and you know that the car has had the timing chain done at some point, you won't look back! It's a great car.
