I have been looking at this forum for sometime and have found it extremely useful, but I have only just joined and this is the first time I have posted a message.
I have an old 406 HDi on 51 plates that I have had for a number of years and has been a very reliable and trusted servant.
I have never changed the battery, so the battery is about probably more than 5 years old, (I realise now that I should have bought a new one by now).
However the problem is that when I felt the battery not performing as usual my first thought is to clean the terminals which required me to disconnect the battery, (I have disconnected the battery previously when changing the clutch without a problem). I cleaned them, re-connected the battery and unfortunately nothing happen, dash lights went on but nothing from the starter. As I was out in the 'field' when I cleaned the terminals, my first thought was to get the cars home so that I may get to work with the tool set, this involved the towing of the car.
When I got home and looked on line at this forum I realised that I should have gone through the BSi dismantling and re-connected the battery sequence. I now have tried this but the 'Economy Mode Active' sign is showing which prevents me from activivating the electric windows, so can not lean in and turn lights on extra.
We live miles from anywhere and have tried as much as I know.
I have checked my battery with an ammeter and it probably needs replacing (just under 12volt before charging). I have attached a fully charged powerpack to the battery and hoped that would 'persuade' the car that the battery is charged.
So I am need of help. First thing is how do I get rid of the 'Economy Mode Active' without starting the engine so that I can open the window and use the BSi process.
Would getting investing in Peugeot Planet and connectors help.
I am afraid I am at a loss.

The procedure regarding switching on lights is NOT essential its just to wake the BSI up gently it wont make any difference to your problem I don't do it I just reconnect then leave it 5 mins then open doors start car as normal

Does the car warn you key is in ignition with door open ?

If yes good sounds like you simply have a starter related issue

If no then you need your keys recoded

Keys needing recoded would not stop the starter working though so I would look at ALL your fuses first.

A second person in the car is a good alternative when you can't do the procedure because the windows are up.

Yes I have just gone out and tried this with someone else connecting the battery. Unfortunately just the same result, no sign of the starter working.

Following reliable406's advice I have checked all of the fuses, one 20 amp required changing but I am still trying to figure out what the fuse does. But it did not make any difference to the starting of the car.

To answer reliable406's question regarding does the car warn if the key is in postiton - yes when the door is open - I get the warning noise.

Regarding the dash lights - the stop light, the odometer LCD, the hand brake light, ABS, air bag, engine warning light, passenger air bag warning light, and battery light are all on when I turn the key.
About 10 seconds or so later only the the odometer LCD, engine warning light and battery light, and handbrake light are on whether I try the key or not.
The battery light goes off when the key is turned.

I do not seem to have any problem with the central locking.

I have not checked any of the relay's mainly because I am not sure how to!

Sounds like it's just a starter problem to me as key is recognised don't keep disconnecting battery or it may end up NOT recognised!!

Check wiring at starter the thin wires can break and the starters can die with no warning try a push start

I am sorry I haven't posted earlier but I am still trying to get someone to give me a tow. Although my brother-in-law has lent me a vehicle for a few days, I did not receive your post until he had left. I am pretty certain I will be able to get a tow soon.
I will be sure to let you know the outcome.

Hi reliable406, at last I have got someone to give me a tow. The car started with considerable ease when towed in second gear, so within a matter of seconds the old girl jumped into action. The "Economy Mode Active" sign disappeared and the car worked as normal, except for all the computer parts like date time etc needs resetting. Whilst the willing tow was still about, I turned off the engine and tried to restart, the engine sluggishly restarted again. So I drove it back and put it on trickle charge. This morning I tried to start it again, but it was back to no go again. Nothing from the starter at all.

So I am assuming that the Battery is the problem, would I be correct in that assumption?

I had a 307 which wouldn't start due to a flat battery. Rolled it down the hil to start it and drove round the block so I was back at the top of the hill and turned off, Started easily even after just a short tun.

Sounds like the battery is beyond recovery but could also mean the starter is no longer up to the job. May just be worn brushes in the starter or it could be the coils in the starter are failing.

If a known good battery doesn't start it then it may be worth replacing / repairing the starter. I'd borrow the use of a good battery and if all is well get a new one, if it didn't start I'd get a new starter.

I agree with storeman sounds more like starter but could be battery

Try a known good battery in it first if it still wont turn over on the key your starter has died.

Thank you storeman & reliable406 I will go and borrow the starter pack again and try it, but I think you are both right and I will have to drop of the starter out and get it checked and if it is beyond repair get another.
I will keep you informed.

Do you have a 2.2Hdi, or a 2.0Hdi? I only ask as the 2.2Hdi is prone to blowing boosted oil over the back of the starter motor from a leaky air-doser....:nono:

I'd try a known good battery rather than a booster pack. I had one, bought new and fully charged before trying it on a difficult to start Renault Laguna. It didn't help one iota but connecting a good spare used battery got it firing in no time.

Do you have a 2.2Hdi, or a 2.0Hdi? I only ask as the 2.2Hdi is prone to blowing boosted oil over the back of the starter motor from a leaky air-doser....:nono:

I have now used a boost starter on the car. The car did not start, but the battery looked relatively OK. So I will take out the starter, see if anything appears wrong with the connecting wiring and if nothing looks obviously bad, buy a new starter.

Okay, I have only done a couple of starters but I think all the 406 Hdis are the same principle.

Unplug the MAF sensor and lift up the airbox and rest it up by the strut.
You have 2 x 16mm bolts and an allen head bolt on the front of the starter, a 10mm and an 8mm nut on the back. Its fairly straightforward, even a muppet like me did it okay, just remember the correct procedure to disconnect the battery first, and leave a door on the latch in case the car locks itself..:nono:

Its a faff, and swapping the battery with a good one as suggested is the first and easiest port of call...:thumb: Make sure the clamps are on tight as well, as a slightly loose connector can cause issues with charging and starting.

I have taken out the starter and looked for local quotes I have been offered two, both Bosch for just over £50, which I suppose is OK.
But one is 2.2kilo volts and the other is 1.7. The natural thought is big is better, but would that be true in this case?

307's suffered from an underated starter motor. Eventually as they got weaker through use, they couldn't turn the engine over fast enough for reliable starting. As reliable406 says, go for the 2.2kw starter.

Thank you both, I will now pop out and buy the stronger starter.
I will keep you informed of my progress.
