Hi. The car was fine and then one morning as I applied the brakes a loud repetitive banging started. I have checked the pads and shoes but both seem fine. The car doesnt have ABS so im a bit stuck. The sound is making the car judder as if the brakes are going on off on off. It is a more drawn out sound than when ABS kicks in and feels like there is a monster under the hood shaking the engine about. There was also plenty of fluid in the reservoir. Also the handbrake started going slack and now hardly works. The banging started as soon as it slakened off.
Any help is most appreciated. Many thanks.

I'm guessing your car has drum brakes on the rear?. We need to know the year/model/brake sysem to help properly, the more information you give us the better we are able to help.
However it sounds to me as though something is amiss with the back brakes, possibly the self adjusters broken allowing too much slack between the shoes and drum.
Pull the drums off again and have a closer look.

Roger.

I believe its a 1.4 meridian S reg. I thought of the shoes but impretty certain its a problem with the front of the car. That seems to be where the bangging is coming from? There are no abs sensors on the front that I can see?

Descriptions a little confusing as they vary a bit. If you have no ABS and the noise is from the front then have you checked for a cracked disc ? Not unknown and would produce a judder like ABS cutting in and out. If you do have ABS then check for a split pickup one one of the driveshafts.

If ABS you should have a warning light on start up.

If Brakes appear OK all round I would check all suspension bushes and drop links as it maybe due to one failing or broken and arm moving when braking
