when driving my 04 hdi expert van, brakes are fine with normal movement and responsive braking, when slowing , e.g to park, brake pedal becomes very stiff, with little movment and stopping is difficult without applying a lot of pressure to pedal, appreciate any ideas as to cause and solution, thanks

Do modern cars still use servo-assisted brakes? I remember there used to be a large diameter cylinder on the pedal/brake mechanism that took a pipe from the vacuum inlet that gave more brake pressure at low revs.

Braking systems have remained largely unchanged for the last 30 years with the basic system consisting of a servo and master cylinder with ABS pumps added more recently between MC and wheel calipers.
It gets complicated with diesels as there are numerous vacuum operated controls that rely on the same vacuum pump so there are restrictors and one way valves to safeguard the operation of the servo.
