Hi Guys,

I'm planning ahead and wanted some advice on how the brake calipers can be retracted on a 307sw 2.0L HDi 90bhp 2003...

I have the dreaded ABS fault, and had that diagnosed as a faulty nearside rear sensor - I'm guessing that it will be the rust issue that is described in detail here on the forum, so want to have a go at cleaning that up before I replace sensors etc.

Also the last MOT advised that the brakes are pitted, but safety not compromised, so whilst I'm pulling things apart, I might as well do the whole job properly and change the discs and pads and be done with it.

So, on that note, do the calipers push straight back in or do they need to be turned and which tool would you guys recommend I get?

I bought a Clarke wind back tool from machine mart not so long back, worked a treat.

The only issue I had was the rubber boot on the caliper was getting caught in the thread, which was a pain in the neck as it meant I had to wind it back out to get the boot out.

To avoid winding up the boot slip a 90 degree pick or small flat screwdriver under the boot and squirt a little wd0 or similar to allow the piston to turn. Put some calliper grease under the boot while you're at it to help prevent the calliper from seizing.

Sound advice Roger, wish I'd have thought of that!

I would not use WD40 the solvent in it can react with some brake seals and make them swell.

I always use a dab of copper or red brake grease in the boot groove
