Hi All,

I have an 11 plate Bipper Tepee with 44,000 on the clock. I've only had it for 3 months and now things are starting to go wrong, well not quite right anyway.

For the last couple of weeks when in both fully automatic or manual as the car draws to a stop instead of dropping down into 1st gear, ready to pull away it drops fully into Neutral. Both embarrassing, annoying and in a way dangerous all at the same time. The only way to get it back into 1 is to fully stop and then it's a bit of frantic lever waggling to get moving again.

It only occurs moving forwards, not in reverse

It's going back to the garage I bought it from but just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and what the solution was.

Kindest regards

Peter

Could be water ingress, my flood damaged Scenic would not drive off from the lights because water had contaminated the auto fluid turning it from clear red to strawberry milkshake. Try changing the fluid, inspect the colour of the of the old.

Thank you for this idea. Even as I write I hope that the garage that I bought it from are in the process of doing exactly as you suggest. I returned the vehicle to them on Tuesday morning and heard, in the afternoon, that they suspect that the oil level in the gearbox may be low as this can lead to the difficulty in selecting a gear. Unfortunately the supplier of the correct 'specialist oil' didn't have any in stock and it was hoped that it would be there yesterday (Wednesday). As today is Thursday and I haven't heard from them yet it looks like the problem could be a tad more serious. I'll contact them later on to see quite what the score is.

Given that the gearbox is supposed to be 'oiled for life' with an inspection of the oil at 60,000 I don't quite see how a) it can lose oil (there are no tell tales signs on the driveway) or b) become contaminated at it appears to completely sealed.

Sealed for life is a lot of bollox auto boxes are worked very hard and oil NEEDS to be changed regularly they use this so called special oil instead of oil changes to make the car seem cheap to service for the first owners as the box will last the 3 or 4 years required out the first owners.

Contamination comes from natural wear on the internal clutches

As for loosing oil they DO use oil they dont have much to start with !! and it is a case of once the level gets low it cooks the remaining oil and ends up killing the clutches.

I have a citroen C4 auto here and it has 85k mies on it i changed the oil when i got it and it was black and was down at least half a litre its hard to be sure as you cant drain it all but it changes well with no issues and should continue to with nice clean oil in it.

OK, thanks for that. I spoke with the garage about an hour ago and seems like they're waiting on a new pump to be delivered/collected. I did notice when I bought the car that it was fitted with a ball hitch so I guess it might well have had some hard work to do in the years before I got it.

Fingers crossed :)
