Hi I have a 2006 2.0 expert van, after starting the battery light flickers a lot of the time but goes out when revs build up so I assumed it is charging the battery however after around 50mls the van stopped with a totally dead battery, I fitted a replacement battery and again light flickers but eventually goes out could it be that its not charging even though battery light is out?

Definitely sounds like an alternator problem either take it to a garage or autoelectrician to be checked or if you are handy with a meter check it yourself. First check battery voltage with engine off, should be around 12.5 V. Start engine and check voltage should be around 13.8V to 14.2V if it isn't increase the engine speed to about 1500 RPM voltage should now be 13.8V to 14.2V if it is less than 13.5V alternator definitely requires attention. If the voltage is correct repeat the test with as many electrical loads switched on, eg headlights, blower fan etc. voltages should be in the same range. To confirm that it is not a wiring fault measure the voltage at the main alternator terminal with the engine off, it should be within 0.2V of the voltage at the battery. If that is correct alternator needs attention.

If the above checks show the alternator to be at fault, it probably just needs new brushes if you have high miles on the van.
