Early Wednesday morning I set off on a long drive in my van and after 5 minutes the battery light came on. The road was pretty wet and I was in the middle of nowhere so I kept going. After another 10 minutes the light went out and stayed out.
Didn't use the van after I arrived where I was working until about 11pm last night when I drove home. Same thing happened.

Obviously there is a problem and I tried to get it checked at my local garage but they can't look at it until Monday at the earliest.

The problem is I have another long drive tomorrow and maybe Sunday and don't really want to break down.

I guess it could be a couple of things:
belt not tight enough, or glazed

alternator on the way out or brushes need changing

i suppose the light could be faulty

What's the best way for me to check this out and try to fix it myself?

thanks

get a multimeter across the battery with engine off and on to check voltages

you should have around 12.5V on battery with engine off and with engine on, ive seen up to 15V

EDIT: DO NOT try and measure amps...you will break the fuses in the car and multimeter and any bulbs on that circuit...i tried and learned...wasnt funny at time but when i look back and think karl pilkington lol

sounds like battery and alternator are fine then. It will more than likely be a loose connection somewhere.

Does your alternator have the 3 wire pigtail coming off it? you will obviosly have the thick power wires but there may be a small connection with 3 wires?

i had to visit someone during the day yesterday, so thought I could use the van as I wouldn't use any electric apart from starting. I took a spare battery and power pack just in case.

No light came on during the 25 miles there and back. Various bumps on the road to jar any potential loose connections.
