my battery light came on,and my battery went flat and the airbag light came on just before the battery light came on. charged battery up twice and the same thing happened in the space of 5 mins each time. usually in a car i thought, when the brushes on the alternator were on the way out the light slowly got brighter and, that does not seem to be the case. is this how the peugeot system works

Start the car, put a voltmeter across the two battery terminals. You should have 13.8 to 14.2volts. If any less than 13.8v them you have a charging problem. Most likely an alternator problem.

ok thanks, only thing is i dont have a volt meter, i was also wondering were you can buy the brushes or voltage regulator for the alternator on my peugeot partner 19 d 2003, its a mitsibushi 12v model, i live in glasgow and would like to refurbish the alternator if thats the problem, rather than spend fortunes.

Its fairly specialist the repair of alternators. You have to be able to test it etc. It'd be cheaper to take yours out and give it to someone that reconditions them.
