Hi hope someone here can help I have a 2006 expert fitted with 2.0 hdi 16v RHW engine. Last week car cut out it after inspection it seems that timing belt has slipped. Mechanic has realigned timing and tried to turn over. He has advised that the damage is at least bent valves but could be worse and he is unable to give further diagnosis without removing engine. I have been advised to find a new engine. I was wondering if anyone here has experienced this before as I was under the impression that the rockers are designed to break off to prevent major damage?

Your mechanic as usual is wrong this can be fixed without engine removal although i always removed them for access and to save a sore back

NO BENT VALVES

The only thing broken is the rockers DO NOT REMOVE THE HEAD !!!

Only problem you will have is getting the injectors out if they come out the job is easy if they dont come out you may be quicker with a good used engine it all boils down to getting injectors out as if you cant get them out you cant replace the rockers.

Cost wise a replacement engine with injectors will cost about the same as fixing your own but sometimes its better the devil you know !!
