So the new cable came and I plugged it in and the phone connected to android auto first time so a good result.

I guess all cables are not created equally

Now you have it working its easy to make it wireless without having to buy an expensive AA wireless adapter.

It works fine in my 2019 3008. I used the zero 2 w board from the pi hut

I just used the cheapest case

Hope all goes well. Going back to the cable issue, it was the third one I tried before getting it to work.

Yeah bit hard to believe they are still using micro usb. Thank heavens for the good old trusted kitchen drawer. Make sure you use the usb socket not the power one on the board.

The cable from the drawer didn't do the job so I ordered a pack of USB C adapters from Amazon. Using the micro USB end with the existing android auto cable the wireless set up worked flawlessly.
