Hello,
When i start my car in a cold condition, and drive off, i have noticed the gearbox slips quite a bit, this slipping tends to stop after about 2-3 km and has a sudden stop to it.
because of the "sudden" stop in the slipping i assumed it may be programmed to do this as the oil is cold and thicker when the engine is cold, and then opens up a valve for normal operations. is this the case?

The reason im posting this here now is that the gearbox has started slipping also when the engine is warm, this happens sometimes when i go downhill or when i have alot of variation in my driving, like when i drive on smaller roads where i often have to stop for other cars, speedbumps or turns.

I drained just a little bit of the oil to see its condition, it is almost a see through grayish color, it still has some of the original color to it, it is hard to describe how it looks, although its not the worst oil i have seen.
It has done 240 000 km and i suspect without gearbox oil change.
I want to change the oil, but i do not know if this may make my problems worse, or if it can fix them?
also it might just be how the gearbox is supposed to behave, i do not know if this is normal or not and am hoping someone here may be able to help me.

I have a fault for the transmission when using pp2000:
Permanent fault. Gearbox input speed signal fault. No signal.

i know i should use the ESSO LT 71141 oil, but can i use other oils as alternatives? will a regular ATF-U damage my vehicle?

Have you fixed it? I have a similar problem.
Yeah i did, here is my post from another forum regarding this.


I finally found the fault, after seeing the break lights not working, i checked the brake switch on the pedal, the were two switches and i check both, working fine. Then i measured current going to it and it was 6v on one and 1.5 on the other.

I then decided to check the fuses and found a broken fuse, i replaced it and everything is working fine again, yay.
Gearbox is shifting and locking into gear, break lights are working, and i can get the gear lever out of P without restarting the car.

It's weird how something like the break light fuse can cause so much trouble, anyway i have learned to ALWAYS check fuses first.
I now have a happy pug once again!

A few people say they have got away with doing that, but when you consider the potential repair bill could easily be more than the car is worth, it is not worth the risk.

As you have sorted the problem, I would not change the fluid. There is a risk that doing so could dislodge debris from the brake linings in the transmission, which could block hydraulic valves and passages.

Thanks for your answer jonatansort. I thought maybe it is a similar problem, but mine is slipping randomly and gets better after a few minutes.

Mine slips when i first start driving as it is running on the torque converter before it locks into gear, mine also does this when i drive on small narrow roads with many turns and oncoming traffic, this is because of the starting/stopping and slow/speeding up. I'm quite sure this is normal.

I did end up changing the oil, although i did not do a flush so i only got 50-60% of the content. I did not use original ESSO LT 71141, but i did use another brand that meets the Specification of LT 71141. My pug is now running fine, no problems at all.

Mine slips a lot some days. I mean i can rev the car untill 4000 RPM and it won't move. Neither in D or R. That is not normal.

Alex_Pie - your problem is probably debris blocking one or more valves, As it clears, it does not sound too bad, so you might improve it by changing the fluid.

Alternatively, you could dismount the valve block and hope to clean it out. The instructions are available in Peugeot Service Box, but an AL4 specialist would be best.

I did changed the oil. Like 3 times so far. Here is the entire story with the car.

Hello. In October 2018 I have bought a Peugeot 207, 1.6 VTI 120 HP, AL4 gearbox. Things went great for about a week when i decided to change the oil and filters. The car was prepared for sale and filled with some kind of aditive because after I changed the oil the car started to burn oil and give a lot of blue smoke. The gearbox was working great at that time.

So I have decided to change the engine because it was cheaper to replace.

The "new" motor was installed, worked good.

I had to change the gearbox oil because it was lost when I separated the gearbox from the engine and here I made a mistake. Instead of yellow oil made by Peugeot i have used Febi code 9736.22 (red). Almost 6 litres.

All went well for a while but soon it got cold in my country and problems has started.

Almost daily, the car drives good for a while(sometimes 1km, sometimes 5km) and after that it starts slipping like a broken clutch. Sometimes it is not that bad, but most of the times the car looses all the power and it won't move before 6000 Rpm. To solve the problem i have to keep going with high revs for about 5 minutes.

In some days the car works fine. I made 3 changes of oil with the correct one( every time like 2.7 litres) and i am planning to change it 3 times more untill i see only yellow oil but untill now nothing has happened. I don't have errors on gearbox, the snow and sport lights are not on. I don't know if the problem is the oil or the cold weather. Average temperature it's about -5 Celsius.

Any ideas?

The problem is probably the oil. As I said, the only way to change it all is to dismount the gearbox. The wrong oil may have contaminated the braking surfaces in the box - they may never recover.

If the car is worth it, I would suggest an exchange gearbox from an AL4 specialist. The other way would be a box from a scrapyard, but how do you know what oil that has had?

I understand, thank you. In spring i will dismount the gearbox in order to change the oil completly. Maybe it is not lost and the change of oil will fix it. Also, in warmer days the box works perfectly.

Your symptoms are usually from the wrong oil, see your other thread.
Worst case senario:
It is possible the new oil has mixed with impurities in the box and could have gotten into your solenoids, you can either replace these and clean your valve body be sure of a fix before you put the new oil in.

Don't forget to re-set the auto adaptive with PP200 in your gear box and correct procedure for oil lever check.

How to clean here
Beware at @2.53 he removes the gear locking mech. tensioner, if you don't engrave where this is lined up before you remove it then it will make you work a lot harder to re-align the gear shifter, and dash, if you do not know how to do this procedure properly, it is very time consuming and complex if installed incorrectly and can cause many problems after and slipping of gears!! Study this before you attempt this clean and replacement of solenoids!!!

Usually cleaning or replacing 13, 14 solenoids is what you need to fix.


Also be carful of part 6 sliding out make sure you have it inserted the correct way and the end is locked into the gear shift mech.

Agree with the above posts regarding oils, cleaning of the valve block. Not difficult job, can be done without removing the gearbox from the car, but cleanliness is ESSENTIAL!

Most common fault with 'earlier' AL4 gearboxes was the 13, 14 valves. They (Peugeot) uprated them but it was not just a swap, it required a gearbox ECU flash with new software. If you do replace your solenoids, check the old ones' plug colour... if they are black, you will not need to do the software flash, if they are not black, you will need this software flash or the new solenoids will not operate properly as they work on a different frequency.
