Hi all,

2010 207 SW HDI (with poor air con)

It's time to have the aircon regassed. the local mobile (man in a van) specialist says he will purge the system, remove old pump lubricant, inject new lubricant and regas - (£60).

Question is - what's the story with the pump lubricant? Does the pump have oil in it somewhere or is the lubricant in the refrigerant gas? :confused:

In reply to the original query, the oil circulates round with the refrigerant gas and lubricates the pump, I personally have never seen a car aircon compressor with an oil reservoir. The same happens with your home refrigerator, without the oil the comp would seize quite quickly. When you have a regas it should include the right quantity of oil some regasses also include a leak detection dye which can be quite useful. I have found in this area that price differences sometimes reflect what is actually done. The correct procedure is to remove the old gas and lubricant, vac test the system as this is more accurate than pressure testing, if OK regas and relube the system. I have found that some of the cheap quotes miss out the vac test which is OK if the system is already in a serviceable condition but if your pressure has dropped so low that the inhibit switch has cut in a vac test is probably a good thing to ensure there are no real leaks. It is always worth finding out what you are getting for your money.

Thanks Renegade, (nice to keep on topic)

Job done - just as you describe - system was all but empty. The chap who did it runs a mobile service around the area (don't know if it is allowed to mention his company here :confused:) and turns up in a van with all the kit. He removed all old oil/gas, vacuumed the system for 30 minutes, refilled with gas and oil and tested. He wasn't happy with the result so did the whole thing again and then fine tuned the gas charge to get it working at best possible temp. This all took around two and a half hours but he still charged only the pre-agreed £60. :thumb:
Of course, I could have gone to Kwik-Fit and they would have put some gas in for £49 so perhaps you get what you pay for - at least some times.

Kwik Fit need to submit turnover figures to head office, the bean counters only see the bottom line.
Your local man sounds like he is trying to get a reputation for doing the job properly and standing by his word.
I know who would get my business.

i can assure you that although mine was a lot cheaper than the £60 that they also did the job right. it was vac tested and refilled with gas and oil. took over an hour to do as well.

It is the vac test that usually bumps the price up as it can take up to an hour depending on how thorough the tech is. Not saying there aren't people doing a cheaper job that isn't thorough as it depends on how much the tech values their time. Looked at doing it myself some years ago before all this lower price gassing, one of the limiting factors was the cost of the gas and disposal of the old gas. I think some of the more expensive regas machines actually recycle the old gas and put it back but a lot just store it in a waste cylinder for disposal.

No need to assure me - I imagine you would make sure they did the job properly. Unfortunately F1 centres haven't ventured north of Manchester yet!
