Hi,
I bought a cheap 407 hdi recently. It drives fine on light throttle, but if I put my foot down, it goes flat and stutters irregularly around 3000rpm, (not exactly the same revs each time). I’m hesitant to say it goes into limp home mode as I can still do 60mph, but it has to be light throttle only. The management light comes on and words to the effect of “depollution system faulty” come up on the display.
I changed the DPF in the exhaust and topped up the fluid. After 5 mins of driving the same faults have appeared. I am 40 miles from a dealer or specialist diagnostic centre and also a mature student on a very tight budget at the moment so dealers is a last option. On an 08, the bill may easily come to more than the value of the car!
No faults were cleared when the dpf and the fluid were changed, the light resets itself after so long. Should the codes be cleared?
I am happy driving the car under light throttle for now, it still gets me from A-B, but considering what has been done already does anyone have any ideas for the next stage to try?

Hi Noddy, thanks for moving the post to the correct bit.
The fuel filter was changed when I got it, but out of curiosity, would that bring the dpf light on? If anything I would have expected starvation which would cause the stutter , but the light?

Term 1, I’m near Stranraer in S.W. Scotland. The car is a 2.0 hdi 135hp 08plate
Don’t think the egr valve has been blanked off, certainly not from me.

The depollution message could relate to anything to do with the fuel/emission side of the engine...ie fuel presure a bit low..hence the filter question..I would suggest gettiing the fault code 'read' to make sure what it is or you will be chasing the fault and may introduce more issues...:thumb:

There is NO DPF light the antipollution warning depollution warning is NOTHING directly to do with a DPF !

Antipollution is just a message.

Filling fluid wont help unless counters are also reset as car will still think its empty !

From your description sounds like a fuel pressure/injector issue rather than DPF related

Reliable 406, Ooft! SO MANY CAPITALS AND EXCLAMATION MARKS!!! , I thought you were shouting at me ?
Slip of the tongue with dpf light. As you know it is the management light and dpf message.
Thanks for the info everyone, I think I will have to bite the bullet and go to get the diagnostics done, then make a decision where or not it’s worth doing depending on the cost.

Your still not getting it the antipollution message/depollution message is NOTHING to do with DPF.

Its telling you SOMETHING is wrong that is going to cause pollution.

If it were DPF then you would be getting a different message along the lines of filter blocked and you would have very little power.

The DPF may be part of the issue due to lack of proper maintainance by previous owner but its not the cause.

Anti pollution/depollution fault is a generic engine fault warning. The only way to know what the problem is is to read the fault codes.I`m on my 2nd 407,both 2.2 hdi`s.I have had depollution fault for,Turbo vacuum solenoids,a split intercooler hose,a broken sensor, and throttle body.
