I would have considered that however, I have it running now and the only issue is lack of power/boost.Could your fuel pump be keyed to the timing and out of sync when you put it back? As has been pointed out your injectors may not be firing. I know on the Clio DCIs the injectors don't open until the fuel rail reaches 600bar during cranking. Of course entirely different system on a different car, maybe a dealership can advise on rail pressures.
Although I said the black smoke was gone, Apparently it is still present but only very slight, the other half noticed it as I pulled away the last time I had it out. Compared to how it was i.e. you had to have the doors and windows closed before you revved the car or you would be covered in black soot, it is now very very much reduced but obviously still not right.
