Sorry this might be quite long

My car is a Peugeot 407 SW 2.0 HDI 55 plate and roughly 1 year ago my diesel was low showing about 30miles until empty. As I was driving the revs started to drop although the car didn’t cut out.
I drove another 2miles or so and then it cut out completely. I walked to the nearest fuel station and added £5 to the tank but the car wouldn’t start after adding the fuel. After waiting about 20mins for someone to come get me I tried the car and this time it started up and i made it home.
After this it seemed to randomly cut out. I had a mechanic come look at it and he said he wasn’t sure what the problem could be and suggested changing the fuel filter
Fuel filter was changed and worked for about a week and then cut out again.
After a while of it cutting out I noticed it was only doing it as I went below half tank so I kept it above half tank of fuel and it worked for about a year up until now
Last week I drove to parents house fine but when reversing out of there drive while 3/4 tank full it cut out
I waited about 5mins and it started up and was able to drive to a garage fill up tank and drive home
Since then it seems to be completely random on when it will cut out, a few days ago it cut out 2mins up the road waited 5mins and it restarted I floored it in 2nd gear and the engine management light came on with a warning saying depolution system faulty. Drove it 7 miles to work. The car was then left for 10 hours and when I returned it started up fine and the engine light had gone off
It’s still randomly cutting out although it always starts again after waiting 5mins but will not start immediately after cutting out
It’s completely random I could drive 100miles and the cars fine or it can cut out reversing out of my drive
Does anyone know what this could be? I’ve been told taking it to a mechanic won’t show them any errors as no faults are showing on dash/computer and there’s to many different things it could be
Any help would be great, is it worth taking to a mechanic and having a diagnostic done?
Thanks

Fuel pump? I had similar on an Merc C320. Would cut out occassionally, then one day, no warning, filled up at petrol station near Heathrow, leaving garage the car sputtered and coughed, thankfully I was about a mile from home, so made it back as it cut out as I rolled into my driveway.

Managed to get it to mechanic the following day, who later diagnosed the bosch pump had failed, although in a weird way. Took him a while to diagnose that as the culprit.

It could be something like a leaf in the fuel tank which gets sucked against the suction inlet. Fuel flow is blocked and the engine stops. After a time, it falls away and the engine starts, only to repeat randomly when it gets near the suction.

Not true, the ECU stores the codes even if it isn't showing on the dash, even if they have self-cleared.

Hmmm. Very thoughtful. How do one get rid of that?
