Hello guys

I have the wonderful job of changing the glow plugs on my 407 sw 1.6 hdi. So while I attempted these during the week the removal of air ducts was necessary and to my horror the air intake part of the turbo had oil showing and the pipe was oiled up.....and to top it off I have been supplied wrong plugs!

The inside of the turbo was oily and the shaft had a bit of play on it and I have read they are good for about 120k so mine is due if this is true at 130k?

so now I know the oil seals are shot and the reason why it blows smoke under acceleration and I now have the job of changing the CHRA.

now, I have read if that if you change the turbo you should change the pick up in the sump and renew the oil after a 50 mile run?

what I would like to know is what wattage oil to use as the information available seems a quite vague, does it really need the pick up changing?

And should I do this after 50 miles?

Cheers for any advice in advance!

A small amount of play in the shaft of a turbo is actually normal as is oil in the air intake as it tends to come from the rocker cover breather with some coming from the turbo seals

If there is a lot of oil then the seals MAY be leaking.

As for replacing oil feed and return pipes I would ALWAYS do them on this engine as turbo failure can be caused by pipes being clogged with carbon.

Ah, Reliable thank you. .

Since posting this I have read up the possible carbon problems that surround this engine.
The fact that it's prone to carbon build up makes sense.

Thank you, I will know more when I remove the other side of turbo pipes to check for play when I acquire the correct glow plugs!

Thanks so much

mine has slight play too.

check the turbo blades for any damage and possible rubbing on the outside.

does the car lose any oil if not i wouldnt think theres a major problem with leaking. can you get a pic of how much there is in there

Cheers monty,
will try to sort something out when I get chance to get under the hood, now have the correct glow plugs, I'm going to remove the egr, pipes and do a bloody good de-coke of this lump.

It has a 95% service history but the garage is not very reputable and I doubt they have even changed the oil let alone lifted the bonnet as these people are happy to just bill the company that owned the car.

The oil is black and really thick, but I'm confident I will save the engine! I'm removing the sump, cleaning the gauze In the pick up, vac pump, egr, breathers will be soaked in paraffin mixed with gunk, a good flush and fresh oil and filter.

I might even have the cam cover off to get to that vcr valve as that might be a cause of oil leaking into turbo intake?

So fingers crossed my turbo will fine!!

Its absolutely disgusting I have to take ladders and steps with me to work and it manages about 213 miles to £40

most of that motorway, im yet to run around town without ladders and steps to see if it changes but scared to at the moment as I have to get it cleaned up and sorted, so I'm back in my trusted 307, thats a 2.0lt and does double the mileage the 407 does.

I was hoping once its sorted the mpg would improve.

31 mpg? It's a lot.
I'm getting 40, and want 50 since catalogue said 50 combined.
Hope you solve this soon or you're broke :)

What's the status with your FAP, EGR, air filter?
Diagbox errors?
Oil is always black on these, even after 10 miles when you change it.
Can You move turbo actuator freely with your finger?

I don't think its actuator probs as you can hear the turbo spooling up and down according to revs and power demand?

it does whine a little hence i thought it was knackered but really it sounds healthy?

I shall test it around town to see if it improves without the crap on the roof rails
