Hi All

My turbo went pop a week or so ago, first lost power and went bang whilst trying to limp home. Death rattle, cloud of burnt oil and overran for about 15-20secs before i turned it off.

So the garage measured the height of the cylinders etc and said it was ok to fit a new (Recon) turbo, which they did. So £750 later and its running but there's no turbo boost at all, while it used to accelerate even in 6th now i'm struggling to get up hills. They are saying maybe a bent con rod or damaged valve and only way to find out is take the head of etc etc and spend lots of ££££'s.

I've just spent all i could raise so couldn't find more if i wanted to.
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

If its running and not in limp mode i would expect it to boost even with any of those faults. I would be checking turbo vac/electrical and intake system first.

If required they should be able to do a compression check either electronically via load on starter (quite specialized kit needed) or via glow plug/injector holes

Would it say if it was in Limp mode? How high will it let me rev the engine in limp mode?

Limp mode will limit revs to around 3k and normally put engine light on and depollution fault message in display

OK well it's not in limp mode and it's back in the Garage. Just had a call saying the dpf could be blocked but wouldn't that show up as in a warning on the dash? I don't want to spend another 250 on something I don't need. :(

Pretty sure it will be related to the vacum control system for the turbo.

Even with a partly blocked DPF the engine will make decent power and boost pressure.
As it occurs just after renewal of turbo, I guess the guys that did the job have screwed something up :)

I would be very surprised if you have a bent conrod as bits coming out of the turbo are not substantial enough to jamb the piston that much.

I would pull the hose of the turbo intake and check the impeller spins freely then get an assistant to start the car whilst you look at the vacuum controlled turbo actuator shaft it should be fully extended with the engine off and should pull in to fully compressed when you start the engine.

I suspect the garage may have left off a vacuum hose or sensor when they changed the turbo.

If you do get it running correctly then follow it up with a couple of oil changes in quick succession as I stuffed my new turbo by not doing this.

Well as expected it was a vacuum problem, one hose has split so they "chopped" off the bad bit and connected it. Sounds to me like someone forgot but I'll never know.

Big thanks to everyone who chipped in with excellent advise, it's always nice to have half an idea when going back to complain.

Now to go and book that oil change :)
