Hi, my 406 HDi has recently started cutting out whilst driving. This has happened about 4 times now. I'll be driving along and nothing happens when I press on the accelerator and then the engine cuts out. Every time this has happened, I have turned on the ignition for about a minute, switch the ignition back on and it's ok again for a few miles then it happens again. Does anybody have any idea what this could be?

Just a thought does it have an egr problem. Try disconecting the pipe to the egr cooler from the air intake manifold. If it sooted up you will see. It would cause lose of power, no acceleartion and even cutting out. If the pipe is full of black gunk then it blocked, you can run the engine and see if starts accelerates. You can cleans the pipes with egr cleaner or take off the car to clean along with the egr. If you diconect the pipe and it runs and excellerates while stationary then its blocked egr cooler and maybe egr. It will pump a bit of smoke. Blanking the egr should help or taking it all off and cleanung egr or getting a blanking plate maybe a remap. Also try fuel filter and fuel pump could be either. Run a diagnostic on a hand held scanner. Check battery alternator etc. Obvious but check fuel level

If its an hdi with an egr valve then its a cause of no acceleration. You can check by finding the pipe to the egr cooler from tje intake manifold on top of the engine on a 1.6 and unscrewing and with the car stationary try the engine and rev it. If it revs then its the the egr thats faulty or sooted. You can dismantle and clean them or replace or even buy a blank. Also fuel filter or maybe electrical. An obd11 scanner for 15 quid will read faults codes and tell you potential faults

Also in cold weather maf sensor, maybe pedal potentiometer. Again a cheap obd 2 fault code reader puts you in the right direction to diagnose the faults. But egr sooting tje inlet manifold and egr staying open can cause no acceration and maybe stalling. Fuel filter, air in the fuel try priming the fuel with the bulb under the cam cover

It's difficult to see, let alone get access to, but underneath the common fuel rail at the front of the engine (the grey metal cylinder that the 4 metal pipes come off that lead to the injectors) you will find the HP fuel pressure sensor. If this fails (electrically, not mechanically) then the car will go into 'limp home' mode, but strangely enough if the connection to it is bad (corroded wires/contacts etc) then this will produce the symptoms you describe. Access to it is possible as is, but it will cost you some skin on your hands! Far better to unbolt the fuel filter housing ( the big black round plastic canister right in front of the engine) and move it away from the engine. Note, at no time should you have to undo any fuel lines. If you get diesel on your hands then something is wrong.

Unplug the sensor. The plug moves downwards to release, but I cant remember the exact details of the catch that holds it in place. use your own judgement. Once unplugged, check for corrosion or damaged wires, as many as you can.

If it should break down on you in the middle of nowhere though without starting again, dont flatten the battery trying to get it going again. unplug the sensor and try starting it unplugged.
