After trying to start the car, turn the ignition off but leave the key in the ignition and open the drivers door. If the car beeps then the key is being recognised but I suspect that it won't beep which indicates the keys will need to be reprogrammed to the car.

Many members have dealer level diagnostics kit and will be able to do this for a few beer tokens as long as you have the pin code. If you don't have the pin code then these are obtainable from the internet or our very own trustme may be able to help out.

406 hdi imoboliser fault

Thanks for the replys peeps regarding imob fault ....but  still no joy ...ive had both keys checked and they fine .tried all possible fixes i can attempt and read off the forums ..even taken up the carpets to check the wiring and earth connectors...just when i do attempt to start the car headlights are stuck on and wipers and imob light ..but can't use electric windows or radio so at a guess its going to be some water damaged electric shortage ...

i had them check transponder were submitting its code.took it to a shop that recodes keys and he said the keys ok plus ive never used the plip key as it never worked since purchase always used the keys manually not checked the coil around the steering tho ..which submits code it to ecu as im told ..im thinking its a electrical fault or ecu corrupt ..but im no car expert  due to age of car im trying to spend a little as possible so attempting all fixes i can manage myself.. im going to get a auto sparky to diagnose a fault as im thinking its a shortage ...:p hopefully after that i can move forward thanks guys

Yes thats what i thought you would say that does not really help you much as the keys rarely fail in that way what is actually wrong is the CAR has lost its codes so does not recognise the keys !

Did you try what storeman posted further back in the thread as this is how you know if its a key problem or not.

i did still think that was a possibility as im sure he would of needed car aswell to properly check the keys ..yes read all replies and thanks again to all ..ok i will go down that route and get keys recoded thanks ..i found some water damage aswell to wiring connects on drivers side footwell as carpet sponge was soaked as i pulled it back :nono: so currently sorting that then ill sort key recoded thanks PS since found i had this fault ..i noticed when put key in ignition and try to start my headlights are always on and cant turn them off with the controls the obvious dash fault lights ..also the electric windows don't work and interface in power saving mode..which i could be wrong but seems quite odd if it was just an imob fault or key problem ..? should i still be able to use functions of car til battery drained just wouldn't be able to start if was just the imob but i could be wrong ..

Yes most likely BUT it may be a lack of power to the com2000 unit does the car beep if you turn on lights if not do you remember if it did before if it did it may be worth removing cowling round column and unplug main connector to com unit then reconnect it should beep.

Its very easy on the 406 to loose the codes by disconnecting the battery too quick so its possible you had not lost them but now have if there is no power to the com unit the recoding process will NOT WORK.

Only delphi units give a bong when unplugged and then plugged back in

If you can turn lights on and off and radio stalk works then it's safe to say comms unit has power

I take it this was not planet he used some other diagnostic or key coding unit planet would be better not because its the best but because you can see much more data as to what is working and what is not it can tell you if the key is being seen if its unlocking the ecu whether its actually coded properly etc etc

They may not even need coded but without the correct equipment and the knowledge of where to look your not going to get anywhere.

I recon its a simple wiring issue in some way.

i was recomended to him and he said he had dealt with alot of 406/ other cars with this issue and 90 % of the time him recoding keys worked for most.im going to find auto sparky with the right diagnostic tool needed to pin point fault if any ..but it does seem to be a wiring/shortage ...thanks :thumb:
