I am getting utterly fed up with my 307 (1.6l 110 bhp), it seems to need attention every month - I've only had it since January.

In April I noticed the first signs of injector blow by on injector 1 and took it to a diesel specialist to have it sorted out (also to check the DPF and put out the mileage related warning if it was OK). Apparently they removed the injector and did the seals, checked the DPF but I ended up turning the light out myself eventually because they failed to do that.

A couple of weeks ago it started rattling badly, looking under the bonnet I noticed injector 1 was blowing by, unimpressed with the garage I got the seals and did it myself. In the process I damaged the injector and had to replace it. I have driven to Switzerland and back and the French alps and back since the garage apparently sorted it, but the state of the injector and seals makes me question if they actually fixed anything.

2 weeks later it is getting rattly, and it looks like injector 2 is now blowing by.

Seems like this is a fairly common problem on these engines (whatever make of car they are used in).

Looking around for a replacement, because I really don't have time to work on the injectors again this week, I have spotted a 307 with the 2l 136 bhp engine, so the question is, is that engine any better than the 1.6l or should I expect that to develop injector problems fairly soon too?

Also the gear selector on mine likes to stick in the left and right positions which can make changing gear a bit hairy sometimes (oh, and I had to change the linkage at the gearbox end because it started popping off the ball joint) - does the 2l have the same or a better/worse gearbox/selector mechanism?

To be honest there are other things I don't like about the 307 (cruise that only works in 4th and 5th gear for example) but there is a very short list of suitable cars in my price range locally just now, and I have learned to fix quite a lot on it already!

2 litre 136 comes with a whole set of other potential issues :)

Dual mass flywheel
vacuum issues
sticky vanes in turbo
DPF clogging

When the 136 engines are right they are far superior but sounds like you want reliable rather than fast in that case i would just redo ALL the injector seals properly as the 1.6 is not that bad really its just some do not know how to do the seals properly !

My 2.0hdi 136 307 was a moneypit for 9 months straight. But once it was sorted a great car. My 2.0hdi 110 on the other hand was fault free, so from personal experience I'd either stick with what you have and sort it, or go back a model to the slightly older engine.

Thanks guys, managed to change the seals on injector 2 in about 2.5 hours tonight (caught it much earlier than injector 1, and better idea what I was doing) so might as well stick with the 1.6 for a while longer. I damaged one of the rubber seals last time so I will get another and then make time to pro-actively do the other 2 injectors.

I have recut the seats on the 2 I have done so hopefully they are done properly, although it is impossible to be sure I have cut them cleanly down such a long hole.

Starting to think the shift problems might all be in the gear stick rather than the selector - the plastic shaft for the lateral movement runs through a plain bearing, looks like someone has put coppaslip on it in the past, what's the best way to lubricate it?

Any 12 year old car is going to start showing signs of wear, and its only going to be as good as the care and servicing the previous owner gave it.

Of course, but having had a garage supposedly deal with the problem on injector 1 when I first spotted a small problem, just 3 months before I noticed it had got bad (worse than before) is not a sign of wear or poor maintenance.
Maybe the garage lied about sorting it out?

Still can't work out the gear shift issue.
