I'm having right fun and games trying to change the auxillary drive belt, thought it would be a nice simple job but how wrong I was.

I just cannot get the new belt on.The old belt was a Dayco 6PK 1156 LE, the replacement from Euro is a Continental 6PK 1153. Eased off the tensioner pulley and the old one popped off no trouble. The new one is fractionally shorter but not really enough to give me this much grief but the new belt does seem thicker and less flexible so is difficult to bend around the pulleys. I did find a reference on here to a "belt stretcher" tool but nothing in the Haynes manual and I cannot see the point of stretching the belt with an automatic tensioner pulley.

I cannot figure out if I am just doing something stupid or it is just the wrong belt? (probably the former) I notice GSF have a Dayco belt 1155mm, would 2mm really make that much difference?

Thanks. I have conceded defeat and ordered the Dayco 1155mm belt from GSF. I think it was the combination of the Continental belt being a couple of millimetres shorter and the belt itself quite a bit thicker that makes it not fit.

I tried all the local retailers and all said the 1153mm was the recommended belt for my car. I even tried the local peugeot garage and they had a choice of 3 but could not tell me the length of any of them.

How can something that should be so simple be so bloody complicated. Every time I have to do any work on this bloody car it turns in to a drama, I should have scrapped the bloody thing when the clutch went, correction, I wish I'd never bought the thing in the first place.

If you have an additional idler pulley as well as the tensioner sometimes these are adjustable so need loosened to get the belt on think that mainly applies to older models though i cant see 3mm making a difference it may be tight but would still go on

I usually find it easier if you fit the belt round all the smaller pulleys first (like the alternator,idler,tensioner ) and try and slid it onto the last pulley making sure its one of the larger ones (crankshaft or air conditioning pulley)

Quick update. Longer Dayco belt arrived this morning and it was fitted in a few minutes. So the Continental belt being a few millimetres shorter and thicker was the problem.

So the lesson I have learnt from this is to check the length printed on the old belt and not trust what the parts suppliers are telling me.

Thanks for all the input. Now I've just got to work through the long list of other problems, primarily a very frustrating intermittent starting fault. Originally thought it was the battery but new battery made no difference, now suspect it may be the starter motor but that will probably be a whole new thread.

The design of the adjuster doesn't allow them to slip on in this engine

Issue is the possibility of it being too long

Peugeot did go to a shorter belt at some point

The only way to fit the belt is to run it all round the pulleys put it on the crank pulley and turn it by hand feeding the belt on
