Hi all,

My son was driving his 207 when the engine warning light came on and the temperature gauge had climbed rapidly.
He dipped the clutch and allowed car to free wheel and the temperature dropped pretty quickly.

Some time later the same day he had the same issue - anyone got any ideas please?
I'm thinking:-
  • Blocked airways to radiator.
  • Blocked waterways in the engine block - maybe drain cooling system, run a flush, and replace with new coolant?
  • Dodgy water temperature sensor.
  • T/stat not opening fully?
  • Water pump starting to fail?
The water temperature gauge has always seemed to be inaccurate, taking a long time to rise, and then occasionally dipping and rising mid journey.
I will check the first item on the list this afternoon.
Car has ~65k miles on it.

if a vti engine the sensor is a weak point, coolant can push through the sensor into the wiring loom causing big problems.

if coolant level hasnt dropped i would swap this first, then if no joy swap the stat.

It's the 8 valve unit so don't think it falls under the VTi engine type?

EDIT: I took it for a drive this evening - it took about 8 miles to get the temperature gauge to move - it originally moved off the bottom of the gauge just past the heavily graduated part of the gauge, then it returned to the bottom of the gauge again.
From about 1.5-2 miles there was heat in the heater matrix - cabin was warm.
When I stopped to check the engine compartment, the top hose feeding the radiator was hot, so I don't think there are issues with the thermostat.

Is there a way to check the sensor operation?

What is the coolant like, does it have adequate anti freeze. I have seen similar issues with weak/no antifreeze where radiator matrix froze due to airflow with thermostat closed, engine over heated but once stopped heat soak thawed radiator and car was then fine until the next overnight cold start.

The faulty sensor symptoms normally results in the temp gauge going off the scale and STOP warning a few mins after startup when you know the engine could not have over heated as well as intermittent same issues when driving

Cheers again for this.

After the drive, I checked coolant and the expansion bottle was empty. I refilled the bottle - to the full mark - it took ~500-600 ml.

I also checked the oil and thought it a bit "watery". I think it may need a head gasket - will bring it to my mechanic on Monday.

I will update as I find out further.

with luck it will be a coolant leak somwhere, you can expect a little 'mayo' in the oil cap this time of year with short journeys, but if its on the dipstick i would be looking at HG fail.

Yes - worst fears realised - it was a head gasket - gone at #1 cylinder. Also head gasket was very brittle.
Mileage is actually 71k, so with a timing belt due at 80k, I'm going to get that changed and do the water pump as well.

All in the mouth of Christmas....

Ho ho ho... not!!:stressed:
