Hi all,

I've a 2006 Expert 1.9d which is now smoking when cold at idle, not so much when warmed up and less when driving. Idle is a little rough.

I've just changed the oil, filters (not fuel), belt, pulleys and pump and had to have a mechanic out to take it away as the timing marks were not where I was expecting (no bolt holes), and it wasn't running right - I actually thought there was a problem with the pulley but not the case.

It's now back and running better, but with the smoking issue (and slightly rough idle).

It had been stood for 2 weeks (ish) and was a little smokey before, but now it's more of a 60 a day van...

I'm out on a job an hour away tomorrow but have given it a good drive today to see if that would burn off what may have just been lurking, but hasn't helped.

Any members any ideas on any causes (any at all).

There are various things that cause this on this engine there are 2 lugs on the flywheel that triggers a timing sensor and this in turn controls the pump timing.

These lugs can break of or get damaged during clutch changes.
The solenoids that are controlled by these lugs can get stuck on the pump.
The sensor on the bellhousing that actually reads the lugs can also get damaged or unplugged.

There is also a pulse sensor on 1 injector.

Everything in the system needs to work but it sounds more complicated than it is.

Thanks for the response.

I see, I was looking at the belt end as that's where I had been moving things around.

I had noticed one of the fuel lines seemed a little wet (the 2 that clip onto the belt cover), so was wondering if it was fuel related.

Is there a good way to fault find this sort of problem?

It could be as simple as a stuck egr valve.
